2018 Transit sync3 2.3 to 3.4

Hello,

I apologize if this has been asked before. I’ve done a little searching, but am not confident I’ve found the answers I’m looking for.

I have a 2018 Transit with Sync3 NAV (v. 2.3) and the 6.5" touchscreen. I’d like to upgrade to 3.4. But I have the following questions:

  1. The Ford Sync site offers a download for maps that costs $100-$140 dollars. I understand this updates the maps to (I think) 2020; but am I right it doesn’t update to 3.4? Does the Ford update give any functionality improvement at all, besides maps?

  2. Can I upgrade to 3.4 reliably, or is it risky? If so, what’s the best way to do so?

  3. I have the more sophisticated IPC cluster that shows turn-by-turn from the factory NAV system. Is there a final verdict as to whether upgrading to 3.4 would show turn-by-turn for non-NAV systems? That is, Android Auto and/or CarPlay?

I’ve read in places that AA pushes to the cluster from a variety of apps, but that CarPlay only does so in Apple Maps. Confusingly, I’ve also read that CarPlay doesn’t push any directions at all to turn-by-turn. Which is true?

Thanks so much.

Josh

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 2.3

New SYNC Version: 3.4

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?

Update Method: CyanLabs Manual Method

You ca use the reformat tool to upgrade directly to Sync 3.4 from Sync 3.0 previous versions. Make sure run the Interrogator Utility to check for MY20+ hardware.

This completely dependent on the app, not necessarily AA or CP.

Thanks. But I’m afraid I don’t understand your last statement. Which app? As I said, I’ve heard both that Apple Maps does and does not push turn-by-turn to the cluster via CarPlay under Sync 3.4. Which is true?

Best,
