Archive: EU Maps to US Car (3.4 Sync, F9 Maps)

Moderator Notice: CyanLabs does not support changing region due to various issues that can occur unless all steps are followed per the instructions below!

NOTE: Newer maps have been released since the tutorial was written. F10 (EU 2.20) maps are now available. Use the F10 files in place of the F9 files thru the tutorial. See note at the end of the tutorial for file listing.

As you know, it is not possible to put full European maps to US-spec car due to storage space limitations, as EU maps require 64 GB of storage, while US Sync only has 32 GB of storage. However, it is possible to load a cut-down version of EU maps on US imported vehicles. This tutorial will update Sync to version 3.4 and install F9 maps (09/2020)

Read this document fully before starting any actions. It is your responsibility to follow the instructions as outlined below.

(DO NOT USE REFORMAT ON 2020 AND ONWARD VEHICLES)

NOTES:

  1. This process uses the reformat tool which is not compatible with MY2020+ vehicles at this time.
  2. You will need a USB drive with at least 32 GB, but it possible to make it work with 16 GB.
  3. This upgrade may result in “USB hub not supported, please remove” error that needs to be dismissed every time starting the car. The error occurs because the original USB hub has not been replaced with the newer version that supports CarPlay.

Instructions

  1. Region changes:
I changed the region before I started the upgrade, so I’m not completely sure if it’s fine if it’s changed afterwards. To do this you will need FORScan with paid or trial license.
    Download FORScan

APIM As Built data needs to be changed:
    from: 7D0-02-01 5553 xxxx xxxx
    to: 7D0-02-01 **** xxxx xxxx
This setting changes the country from US to your country code. If it is not 5553, your car is not from US, or the entry has been changed already by someone else.

ACM As Built data needs to be changed:
    from: 727-04-01 x0xx xxxx xxxx
    to: 727-04-01 x3xx xxxx xxxx
This setting changes the region from North America to Europe. If it is not 0, your car is not from US, or the entry has been changed already by someone else.
    and from: 727-04-01 xxxx xx55 53xx
    to: 727-04-01 xxxx xx** **xx
This setting changes the country from US to your country code. If it is not 5553, your car is not from US, or the entry has been changed already by someone else.

NOTE: The country codes are located at As-Built Database - CyanLabs, select the Region tab.

  1. Using the Syn3 Updater, download the required files and place the files on the USB drive.
    I. Below is an example setup using Sync 3.4.19200. Notice that the original configuration is Sync 3.4.19200, Region: NA, Navigation: Yes, and the new Sync 3 version is Sync 3.4.19200, Region: EU, Map Version: F9 (2019) - EU (09/2020).

  2. There are 2 methods to accomplish the update:
    I. You can scroll through the files and deselect the maps and nav voice files you do not need in the Syn3 Updater. (Keep the Apps, Voice, ENH_DAB, Gracenotes, and Map License files.)
II. Or, you can download all of the files and then choose the map and nav voice files to install by editing the reformat.lst file. See below for explanation of the maps and nav voice file selections.

NOTE: If you have a 16 GB USB drive, the Syn3 Updater will still try to put all the files on the USB if you do not deselect the files you don’t need. The problem is that EU setup takes more than 16 GB, so the app will fail.

  1. Start the download and let the app load the files to the USB. Since this process uses the reformat tool, you will have an autoinstall.lst and a reformat.lst file on the root of the USB drive. Depending on the method you choose above, you may need to update the reformat.lst file. In order to put EU maps on US car, you will need to remove some map packages from countries that are not required for you.

NOTE: No changes will be done to the autoinstall.lst file.

If you downloaded all of the files, your default reformat.lst file should look like this:

The 1U5T-14G421-B*G files contain maps:

1U5T-14G421-BAG - REQUIRED!
1U5T-14G421-BBG - REQUIRED!
1U5T-14G421-BCG - Denmark, Finland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden
1U5T-14G421-BDG - Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar
1U5T-14G421-BEG - France, Andorra, Monaco, Switzerland
1U5T-14G421-BFG - Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, The Netherlands (Holland), Poland, Slovakia
1U5T-14G421-BGG - Albania, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Malta, Slovenia, San Marino, Turkey, Vatican, Italy
1U5T-14G421-BHG - Bulgaria, Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Romania, Russia, Ukraine
1U5T-14G421-BJG - Cyprus

The 4U5T-14G422-B*E files contain navigation voice files:

VOICE_NAV=4U5T-14G422-BAE - English, French, German
VOICE_NAV=4U5T-14G422-BBE - Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish
VOICE_NAV=4U5T-14G422-BCE - Czech, Polish, Russian
VOICE_NAV=4U5T-14G422-BDE - Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian

  1. Depending where you live, you will not need some maps and voices. I kept both BAE and BBE and removed the BCE and BDE language files and removed multiple map files. For example, I’m from Lithuania, so I only kept BAG, BBG, BHG maps files (first two are necessary, the third contains my country). With a US 32 GB APIM, with the app, voice, Gracenotes, and Enhanced DAB files, there is enough room for about 4 map files (approx. 12 GB) and 2 nav voice files (approx. 6 GB), plus the map license file.

This is how my reformat.lst looks:

  1. Once your USB drive is ready, put in the car and update. My setup with 2 voice and 3 map files took around 25 minutes.

Nice work kept meaning to document this properly, i have notes all over the place regarding this but never documented it.

Worth noting you may need to change the region in AsBuilt via forscan also

True about the region. I changed it to Lithuania before I started the upgrade, so I’m not completely sure if it’s fine if it’s changed afterwards. Anyway, to do this you’ll need a Forscan with paid/trial licence.

Summary

ACM As Built data needs to be changed

from: 727-04-01 x0xx xxxx xxxx
to: 727-04-01 x3xx xxxx xxxx
If it’s not 0, your car is not from US, or the entry has been changed already by someone else

and from: 727-04-01 xxxx xx55 53xx
to: 727-04-01 xxxx xx44 45xx
If it’s not 55 53, your car is not from US, or the entry has been changed already by someone else
44 45 will set the region to Germany, but you can set yours by converting country code to HEX format here: ASCII to Hex | Text to Hex Code Converter

For example,
Lithuania (LT) is 727-04-01 xxxx xx4C 54xx
Poland (PL) is 727-04-01 xxxx xx50 4Cxx
