Errors on 16GB APIM because itts full and unable to reformatt

Looking for a copy of the old Ford Map/Partition Cleanup utility file: GB5T-14G386-SB.tar.gz. It was removed from Ford’s servers and I need it to clear out orphaned map fragments on a 16GB Non-Nav APIM.

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Non Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: Unknown

Old SYNC Version: 3.4.26057

New SYNC Version: 3.4

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
Tried to install cut down maps but get various errors. latest was it kept rebooting. So Disabled Navigation in Forscan. Now 16gb is almost full and unable to clean up orphaned remants. Thought it was 32GB APIM. Dont want to use jailbreak yet.

The file has not been removed, I’ve just checked. It does not remove maps, only gracenotes. There’s no map removal package.

Try a different computer and/or network, make enough free space to reformat it (you said it’s pre-MY20)

Thank you for checking! The core problem is that my APIM is currently on Build 3.4.26057, which actively blocks a direct forced reformat.

Because of this, the only way forward is to try a Downgrade, Autodetect, or Autoinstall via Syn3 Updater to get the system to an older version that permits a reformat. However, because my 16GB Non-Nav APIM is completely choked with roughly 14GB of orphaned map fragments (leaving me with only 895MB of free space), every single one of those secondary installation methods fails immediately with a MEM_ERR01 error.

The system physically does not have enough room to cache or execute the downgrade files, and Build 26057 won’t let me force the reformat directly. Since my storage is full and the build blocks the reformat tool, I am completely stuck. Is there any known script or command that can force a partition purge or clear space from this specific software state?

Try removing gracenotes and installing the small voice package.

I appreciate the suggestion! However, looking closely at my latest Interrogator Log partitions, Gracenotes isn’t actually installed on the system right now, so there is nothing to remove to clear up space.

As you can see below, my map partitions are completely jammed, and my main system images partition only has 895MB of free space left. Because the chip is entirely choked by these map files, even trying to install a small voice package will trigger a MEM_ERR01 because there isn’t enough temporary caching space left to unpack the files.

Here is the exact partition layout from my log:

Version 3.4.26057
APIM Free Space: 895M

Partition Type = Free / Total
/fs/sd/MAP/ = 15M / 1.5G
/fs/sd/MAP/ = 14M / 1.4G
/fs/sd/MAP/ = 124K / 1.7G
/fs/sd/MAP/ = 6.6M / 1.3G
/fs/Nuance/ = 24M / 2.5G
/fs/Nuance/ = 3.2M / 465M
/fs/rwdata/ = 927M / 1.2G
/fs/images/ = 895M / 10G

Installed Packages:
4U5T-14G421-CGJ (Map)
4U5T-14G421-CFJ (Map)
4U5T-14G421-CBJ (Map)
4U5T-14G421-CAJ (Map)
5U5T-14G391-CS (Voice)
4U5T-14G422-CAR (Nav Voice)

Is there any low-level utility or scripting tool that can target and format the /fs/sd/MAP/ mount directory directly to clear this logjam?

I think you already have the small voice package installed, since it’s only about 300mb.

Have you tried installing 3.3.19xxx? I do not think it will work, but you never know. Try a master reset.

If nothing works, your only option is to jailbreak the unit and run their nav removal script.

I appreciate the help, but I think there is some confusion regarding my hardware state. I cannot try your build or downgrade suggestions because of the exact catch-22 we hit last month.

My APIM is currently on Build 3.4.26057, which actively blocks a direct forced reformat. Because of this, the only way forward is to try a Downgrade, Autodetect, or Autoinstall via Syn3 Updater to get the system down to an older version that permits a reformat.

However, because my 16GB Non-Nav APIM is completely choked with roughly 14GB of orphaned map fragments (leaving me with only 895MB of free space), every single one of those secondary installation methods fails immediately with a MEM_ERR01 error. The system physically does not have enough temporary caching space left to unpack an app package or an older installer.

I have already tried:

  • Multiple manual master resets

  • Consecutive back-to-back master resets

  • Hard-rebooting the APIM module directly via FORScan

None of these cleared any cached partition space. Gracenotes isn’t actually installed on the system right now, so there is nothing to remove to clear up space, and the Voice package partition is already full.

I know the public Ford server links to the GB5T-14G386-SB.tar.gz map-purging utility may have been removed, but I am sure someone here has a copy of this file stored away in their private archives. If anyone has a saved copy of that map-purging utility file, or a lightweight manual script sequence that can force a raw version downgrade without triggering a MEM_ERR01 cache error, please share it!

Hi SaNdMaN,

Just providing an update as I continue to leave no stone unturned while looking for a resolution.

I attempted a controlled baseline test today to see if I could force a downgrade to a 3.3.19xxx build. Prior to inserting the media, I performed a sequence of two consecutive Sync resets, two consecutive Master resets, and one final Sync reset to clear out whatever operational cache I could.

As you expected, the 895MB space wall held firm. The installation attempt immediately threw a MEM_ERR03.

Interestingly, when attempting to cycle back to a legacy package configuration payload, the APIM threw a ‘USB storage device has been changed or removed. Installation will resume when device is reinserted’ loop error. I cross-tested this behavior across multiple verified USB drives (including an external 1TB storage drive) with the exact same result—confirming the internal partition structure is entirely choked by the 14GB of orphaned map fragments (4U5T-14G421-C*J) and cannot safely handle standard media mapping right now.

Because the system is fundamentally blocked from downgrading or formatting via standard methods, I am still actively looking for a mirrored copy of the GB5T-14G386-ZA (or compatible partition-wipe utility) file to clear the map partition natively. If any community archivist has a copy of this utility saved on a local drive, your help would be massively appreciated!

Thanks again for your guidance on this

Hi SaNdMaN,

Just to provide some technical context on why I’ve been hunting for the GB5T-14G386-ZA utility: it looks like this wasn’t just an internal leak, but was actively distributed in early manual mapping packages across several Ford enthusiast spaces.

I managed to locate historical documentation from an older F-150 Forum map update thread (specifically tracking the LST_ERR05 resolution era) proving that users were actively deploying GB5T-14G386-ZA.tar.gz right inside their SyncMyRide directory configurations. [1]

https://www.f150forum.com/f118/sync-map-update-lst_err05-479185/

The exact file architecture they used was:

  • Item1 = GB5T-14G386-ZA

  • Open1 = SyncMyRide\GB5T-14G386-ZA.tar.gz [1]

Since it was verified to be running sequentially ahead of the heavy JR3T map chunks to prevent installation failures, it seems to be exactly the script required to clear out my 16GB APIM’s partition bloat natively. [1, 2]

If any archivists here still happen to have an old manual map package from that specific era sitting on a drive, please check if this file is tucked inside your folder structure. SYNCGen3.0_2.0.16074

Maybe try the rwdata partition cleaner? It might clear up some space.

Tried and no luck. I believe the map partition cleaner file was included in Sync 3.2.0.16074 which is no longer available on Sync3 Updater. The oldest currently available is 3.3.19052

Jailbreaking was the only way forward here because nobody could provide the missing validation files, and even if they did, it would have been a total shot in the dark.

Right now, I am still struggling to install even just the North East maps. Heads up for anyone trying this: when you select version 3.4.23188 in the Syn3 Updater app, it automatically writes files that force-update the APIM straight to 26057 anyway.

Because 26057 has tighter security blocks and heavier file sizes, it completely maxed out my 16GB non-nav partition capacity. The full drive threw the system into a continuous “Loading Maps” reboot loop and started blacklisting standard USB script runs (PKG_ERR04). Moving to a raw memory flush next to try to clear the partition wall.

Jailbreak and build 3.4.23088 got me out of jail.

I’ve temporarily given up trying to run navigation on my 16gb unit, even with cut down maps and only selecting North America. When the English Voice is selected it takes the file size too close to the upper limit.

Since it clearly states there is no support for cutdown maps on non-nav units. I’ll let this be the solution. Thanks.

Well, there’s a reason I said this about 2 weeks ago :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Have you tried removing gracenotes and selecting only the region you are in?, not the whole country, just the region…

Tried to install cut down maps but get various errors. latest was it kept rebooting. So Disabled Navigation in Forscan. Now 16gb is almost full and unable to clean up orphaned remants. Thought it was 32GB APIM. Dont want to use jailbreak yet.

Yes I did remove Gracenotes and selected Only Northeast when choosing cut down maps. However when selecting the English Voice in cut down maps, the file size and install size of maps got considerably larger.

I have decided to find a 32gb Nav APIM from a salvage yard, or just continue using my google maps. I found a decent priced Nav unit on ebay but it arrived DOA. I can read and write to APIM with forscan but no display.

I am ever so grateful to you and others for your assistance, and I did say in my original complaint that I was not ready to jailbreak yet. :backhand_index_pointing_up: Since nobody had the file I was looking for, two weeks later I decided I had exhausted all other options and went forward with the jailbreak.
