I may have Bricked my Buddies Radio

A couple of years ago I successfully updated my sync using the updater. The other day I gave the thumb drive to my buddy not remembering that it was vehicle specific when you do the update.

He now has a black screen and the radio will not work. When he turns the truck on it prompts to enter USB. He does not know his old information before entering the thumb drive.

From what your saying, it’s in the reformat phase (mustang displayed)… If so, create a new USB with 3.0 as current and 3.4 as new build . That should create a single USB that will reformat the unit.

This only applies to not-MY20 units, which based on your very light description seems to be the case.

In case of doubt, do not proceed until sure it’s a not-My20 model

What year and model vehicle is this? I am guessing the 18 F150 is your truck and not the one you’re talking about?

Like Sandman said it reeks of a MY20+ APIM but you have it as SYNC version 3.0 which was an early version unlikely to be found on a MY20+ APIM.

THe version that I had to enter is incorrect. We do not know what version he actually had.

The truck he was putting it on is a 2018 F150. Same as mine.

He does not know his actual previous version. He plugged in my USB drive from a couple of years back and it went south from there.

So… what is it?.. A black screen would not ask for any USB…

I asked before about the screen shown, I had no reply.
So lets do this: tell your buddy to send you a photo of the screen when the “insert USB” message appears.

I am going to try to explain the whole situation in the best way I know how.

Roughly 2 years ago I wanted to upgrade my sync in my 2018 F150 because I preferred the way that the new sync looked. I came across syn3updater and did my research. I followed all of the instructions and was successfully able to install it on my truck.

Fast forward to last week. My buddy was in the truck with me and asked " How did you get yours updated". I remembered I had the USB in my console from when I had done my truck 2 years prior. I gave him the USB and he took it home that night and input it into his 2018 F150 with the same radio. He said when he put it in it acted like it was working and then at the end he got an Orange screen. Now when he starts up the truck it says enter USB and then the screen goes black.

Out of my ignorance, I didn’t remember that it is not as simple as take my USB and give it to him. Sync versions etc. need to be inputted correctly into the updater to format the USC Correctly.

I will follow up with the picture as soon as I have it.

I’ve reviewed my original post and the chosen wording was awful and not a question per se:

I was under the impression I added a ? to the mustang part, or asked a puntual question… which was not the case…

So, apologies for asking you to answer a question I’ve technically not asked…

Ask your friend if he sees something like this:

This sounds like he is on the reformat phase, which is good…
He should be seeing something like the screen I’ve sent before.

If so, it’s recoverable.

So double check with him what’s the screen he is seeing.

Make sure he doesn’t have another usb connected

He doesn’t. He has the exact same one I used for my vehicle 2 years ago.

He said he looked up the code and it said it was for trying to install a navigation update on a unit that did not have navigation available.

Thanks, so that confirms he is stuck on the reformat phase, which is an easy fix.

Have him create a new USB with Syn3Updater, with:

  • MY20 protection disabled
  • Any 3.0.xxxx as current build
  • Make sure Syn3Updater is configured as NO-NAV
  • The latest 3.4 as target

That will create a reformat USB, that’s what he needs.

That looks good, it’s a reformat USB.

If he has issues, try a different USB since I’m not sure how well known or good Lexar is.
