Issues Updating Early 1.0 SYNC Build

EDIT: the update process never progressed past the “Updating System Software…” message on top of the screen when I tried updating the APIM yesterday, but I got in my car today and it displayed the message on top of the screen with no USB drive plugged in then all of the sudden it was updated to 2.2 the next time I got in the car, which was the build I originally tried to install. Must just be an odd issue with trying to update the early builds of SYNC 3. Thanks for the help!

Hey there! First off, thanks for what you guys do here on the forums! This website is a gift to the Ford community! Anyway, here’s the problem: I have an early SYNC build (1.0 15139) and I am attempting to upgrade to 3.0 or later. The issue is, when I plug the USB drive into the hub in the car, it will read it but not progress past the “Updating System Software…” message on the top of the screen. I did find a thread where someone had this exact issue with a Focus with the same SYNC build and someone said to perform a reformat rather than a regular install. Well, I’ve tried reformatting to SYNC 3.3, installing 2.2 and installing the latest version of SYNC 3.4 to no avail. Another odd thing I feel like I should note is the APIM seems to only detect the USB drive if it is formatted to FAT32. I thought it was supposed to work with exFAT, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Something else to mention is it does appear that the previous owner of the car attempted to do the Apple CarPlay upgrade. The USB hub was replaced with a CarPlay one (HC3Z-19A387-B) at some point in the car’s life. I get a message on initial boot up that says “USB hubs not supported. Please remove.” Presumably because the hub was upgraded but the SYNC build was not updated. The hub works fine though. In any case, what do you guys think? Is there something else I could try other than a simple reformat? Do you think that perhaps my APIM has something wrong with it? Worst case scenario, can I swap my APIM with one from a 2017-2019 Fiesta ST that has a newer build on it? Or if I got a new one from Ford, would that come with a newer build? I will provide the log output for the most recent build I tried (reformat to 3.3). Thank you for any help you can give me!

Try selecting the version you actually want not the one you already have.

Yeah my bad. I haven’t been able to successfully update to any version so I didn’t know what to put. I just changed it to the last one I tried.

  1. make sure you don’t have anything in the other USB port, not even a disconnected phone charging cable
  2. Have you tried the other port?
  3. You need to use a good quality USB (eg PNY/SanDisk/Lexar/Samsung), if you’re using a USB you’ve had for a while reformat it as exFAT with “quick format” unchecked. This will force the drive to de-allocate any bad blocks.
  4. You could have a bad USB hub or a knock off

I did try both ports and my USB is PNY, however, I did not uncheck the quick format option when I formatted it. I will try unchecking “quick format” and if that doesn’t work I will purchase a new hub directly from Ford to make sure it isn’t a knockoff. I’ll keep the forum updated. Thank you!
