Please describe in detail your issue below

I was offered a large 22GB map update from the Ford Sync website (Map_23667292793_Update.zip) but I am not 100% sure this fully installed correctly. The system info shows that I have F10, but I do not know if this means it is fully installed or partially.

When I tried to repeat the update process (downloaded fresh on to the USB drive), I got the MEM_ERR01 error. Again, I’m not sure if this is because the memory in the unit is full, or the update is not required.

When I created the XML file to upload to Ford, it said the update was successful. Subsequently I have been offered a 8.44GB map update (Map_9152262379_Update.zip) which when I try to install I get the MEM_ERR01 error again. I contacted Ford about this, and they said that this update was offered in error and that if it says I have F10 then all is good.

Just wanted a second pair of eyes really, to see if I actually have everything installed OK.

The reason I think there might be a problem is that the first part of the 22GB map update completed and a message came up saying that a key cycle was required - but the unit restarted and continued with the update. I wasn’t therefore sure if this meant I needed to do the key cycle there and then or wait for a further message. In any case, it was necessary for me to turn the car off and when I turned it back on again I kept getting the MEM_ERR01 message.

I’m not sure if I really needed to redact the VIN, or if it’s available within the coded parts of the file, but let me know if it’s required.

Thanks in advance.
Jamie

You are correct in assuming that the Ford packaged map update did not install correctly. It appears 2 of the 11 installed are corrupt, or did not finish installing, or are left over items to be replaced. Here is the list you are supposed to have installed:

Trying to fix this with the Ford packaged map updates is hit and miss, and in your case was kind of successful. This is because the Ford package sees nothing to fix at this point. But the update did finish, but there are items left behind and it appears that there is a voice file missing. (Maybe the system voice file?)

The whole problem lies in how Ford has displayed messages in the updates, like the key cycle messages when nothing needs to be done. The whole map update process is automated, including the reboots. BTW - Ignore the key cycle messages. Lucky for you, your car is NOT a MY20 model, and you can fix this easily, but not with the Ford process. Use the Syn3 Updater to reformat the Sync unit (APIM) and install the new app versions and maps. This process takes about 60-90 minutes.

Note: The Syn3 Updater app will downgrade the unit to Sync 3.3.19052 and then run the reformat tool to wipe the unit and install the new apps and maps with voice. This is an automated process and you do not need to key cycle or reboot anything manually.

You can download the Syn3 Updater here:

Thanks so much for that information. It’s amazing that the on-screen info can say one thing but not that the installation is bad. Worse still that uploading the XML file gives a “yep all fine” success message. Maybe the files that I have subsequently been offered are to correct the bad install, I have no idea.

I have decided to use this tool. I chose Sync 3.4.21020 to match the Sync version I have installed and the F10 maps - all with the downgrade method.

As the downgrade method downgrades Sync and does a reformat to install fresh, will the tool update Sync again afterwards? Should I go with the next version (Sync 3.4.21098)?

Thanks
Jamie

It will install the version you tell it to install. Since you have a 2018 Focus, assuming it did not come with Sync 3.4, I would install the latest. Automatic updates was probably not working if you upgraded to Sync 3.4 with that vehicle anyways.

I’ve only ever updated via USB. If I go with the latest Sync version (newer than what is available from the Ford website) will I be able to upload the XML file to Ford and continue using their tool or should I switch to the Syn3 Updater moving forwards? I guess I’m wondering if I’m going to get a slapped wrist from Ford and/or void the warranty :grimacing:

No. Not very likely.

You can upload the XML to Ford but if your vehicle didn’t come with Sync 3.4 from the factory it is a moot point.

I have been keeping up with the Sync updates and uploading my logs accordingly. The latest Sync update Ford offered was 3.4.21020, which I had installed but things went wrong when trying to install F10 maps.

I’ve used the Cyanlabs tool now to redo everything from scratch - 3.4.21098 and F10 all installed. And I even have radio station logos again which had disappeared in a previous update.

I did a factory reset - just having a problem getting the FordPass activation prompt to come up on the display now. Not sure why it wont show even after a key cycle.

Thanks so much for helping me get things back on track.

Jamie

FordPass has recently changed the activation to 24 hours after first request. This is supposed to be for first time activations but I’ve seen that it is really affecting all activations. Be patient…

Glad it’s all working now. Enjoy…

Here’s the new log file. Does this look right? I think it’s different to what you said I should have, but that may have been for the previous sync version.
