MEM_ERR01- Vehicle turned off about 2.5 hours into install

Hello! Wondering if theres anyway to fix this, new to this type of car programing but I am comfortable with doing this type of stuff as I do alot of software installs and what not at work, just unfamiliar with this.
2020 Ford Explorer ST

Long story short I was trying to upgrade Sync and Maps
Previous versions:

  • Sync 3.4 Build 19200
  • Maps NA 1 18

To the newest version Build 26507 and Maps NA 2 20, about 2.5 hours into it a family member noticed the vehicle running and thought they were being “helpful” and turned off the ignition. They let me know and I ran out and saw that Maps shows its updated to NA 2 20, however Sync still shows Build 19200. When I tried to reinstall it I now get MEM_ERR01. Ive factory reset the radio a few times, tried reinstalling without Gracenote and tried different USB’s as well as reinstalling Syn3 just incase. Log files are below from Interrogator. Is this able to be fixed or am I out of luck? I do have an open recall for the sync software to be fixed or something like that, would that correct this issue? Thank you, and please let me know if more info is needed.

The install should only take about 30 min to upgrade both the maps and Sync for NA.

BUT! You have a 2020+ APIM and you will brick it if you reformat it which is what is required to update the maps. There is a chance you might have a K series in that and got away with it but your playing with fire.

You can update the Sync version though and that should go just fine on a 2020+ APIM.

That’s the thing it says MEM_ERR01 and won’t allow me to update SYNC. The maps DID update however the SYNC software itself didn’t. I’m hoping when I take to the dealer for the SYNC system recall maybe it involves updating the newest version?

Side note, what is a K version?

I’ll attach a picture from the Ford app referencing the recall for Sync.

That log is not right, there’s information missing.

Have you master reset?.
If yes, go into bezel diagnostics (google how to depending on model) and look for the SW packages installed on the unit. Take note (or pictures) of every one of them and share it with us.
If no, do it and check the interrogator once more to see if new packages are shown.

Also, would be great to see what autoinstall.lst file you used for installing that.

It’s the first letter of the part number. K series’s APIM’s were mostly put in 2019 models and are the most desirable versions. They were the last year before Ford changed the video drivers on them which made the reformat tool incompatable with the next years(2020+) L series APIM’s. The K series has the newer Gen 3 hardware, is faster and can run the later Gen 4 calibrations which make it work with newer features in the vehicle.

Based on your MY you should have an L series in your Explorer which was incompatable with the leaked reformat tool. You will find many threads on here about people who “Bricked” their 2020 APIM reformatting it. If you have a NA 2020+ model APIM and the reformat tool worked on it without bricking than your kinda a unicorn you might say.

Best way to know is to take the APIM out and look at the manufacture date on it. There are also replacment J series APIM’s that are 2020+.

Gotcha, thank you for the detailed breakdown! So the installer now checks to see if you have a MY20+ vehicle and if so skips the reformatting of the system and just installs it instead. So it installed the Nav update, but is failing installing the Sync version.

Here are pictures of the Bezel menu. I copied the logs directly from the AsBuild logs after running interrogator. Did I pull the incorrect logs then? The only other thing I had was this site breakdown not sure if the information is useful.

Also, I’d be more than happy to share the install files… where would they be located as I used Syn3 auto install method for NA.

Thank you guys for your input, it’s really appreciated.

Thanks, but that’s not the pages I’m looking for. There’s one that lists the installed packages on the unit, sometimes the interrogator do not see all of them (like your case), but maybe that one does.

Gotcha is this the one you’re looking for? I snapped a couple of these as well however it only shows partials as it scrolls, I took pics of the first and last parts of the information. I’m not with the vehicle at the moment but if it’s the page your looking for I can write the names down later today.

That’s the one, yes… But you will have to go through each one of them and get the full name…

No picture is needed, just take note.for every one of them

You have the last maps, 2.20 before the ECN was required. You will not be able to proceed beyond that without reformatting or purchasing them from Ford.

That is a 2020+ APIM so dont format it or it will brick.

This is the first and second row complete numbers. I can grab the 3rd one if needed, they are just about 50 letters long and scroll by pretty quick, and a pain to grab lol

Did you master reset and checked if the interrogator log output is more complete ?

Yes, same report info after the reset sadly. I actually was able to get ahold of Ford and they sent out a tech yesterday to perform 2 recalls, one including getting Sync updated and he couldn’t do it either. Gonna bring it in to the shop in a couple weeks when I have time and have the actual software tech push the update. The field tech said he didn’t have the capability to properly do it and hadn’t personally seen this issue before, Ford tech support told him to do a reset as well and that was about all the help they offered.

Ok, there are some things you could try.
Can you share the autoinstall.lst file you used for upgrading?.

Clearly, the unit is not telling the whole story, there’s corrputed data on the unit.
There are a few things you could do “trigger” some kind of cleanup, but I’m not sure it will work.

One thing you could do is removing gracenotes. That will free up some space on the unit (you have way too low free space). If that works, you could also try installing other packages that will replace the ones installed with smaller ones. And THEN you run an interrogator log to see how much free space the unit has.

If it has enough space, you can try re-running the original upgrade but in segments.
