It does not hurt to try. Android Auto is not as picky as Car Play… In fact, many people that updated to 3.4 could get away with using Android Auto with an old hub, but they could not get Car Play to work without changing the hub…
I waited until the new usb hub was in and tried everything out. Car Play worked perfect. Thanks for all the help.

I just went through the deal with my 17 Focus RS… I was able to use the USB and get to 2.2. I tried a few USB sticks, a cheapo one worked. It was after a few tries to get to 2.2. Make sure you do exFAT format first. you may want to try as Master Reset as well to start and try different USB sticks.
After 2,2 got updated I could not get to 3.0xxx the Ford way after 20 tries and reboots and key cycles, used Cyan and was fast and smooth!! I am at 3.4xx now
