2016 FPIU Non-Sync to SYNC 3 Retrofit

Sync 3 Retrofit Issue in 2016 PIU – FCIM Temperature & Rear Defrost Problems

Hello,

I’ve been helping a friend with a Sync 3 retrofit on their 2016 Police Interceptor Utility, and everything is nearly working, except for the FCIM temperature control (hot/cold) and rear defrost.

Vehicle Information:

  • Model: Ford Explorer
  • Engine: TiVCT
  • Engine Capacity: 3.7L
  • Year: 2016
  • Generation: 2016 MY
  • Fuel Type: Gasoline
  • Transmission: Automatic
  • SYNC Version: SYNC 3
  • VIN: 1FM5K8AR3GGC08124

It seems like it’s not an AB issue but more likely a wiring problem (though I could be wrong).

New Replacement FCIM:

Original FCIM:

The only theory I have so far is that the HVAC module might need to be swapped, since the original FCIM is single-zone and non-automatic. (I know the PIU is missing the parts to make it auto/dual zone.)

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

The FCIM-B in these communicate over the HS3 CANbus so if the radio controls are working than your than your wiring is fine. The FCIM-B signals runs through the GWM and on to the MS Can where the HVAC module lives(See below).

You either have a bad FCIM-B, an incorrect AB on the HVAC module or like you mentioned the HVAC module needs to be upgraded. I would start with the AB int he HVAC module.

Make sure HVAC module is set to Sync 2 or 3 for the APIM(depoends on calibration) in the AB. This does not rule out a bad APIM setting either.

You may also want to throw your factory AB into the new FCIM as well.

There is no AB on the FCIM on 11-19 Explorers.
