I want to upgrade my tcu to be able to use the app but i have a tendency to really overthink things and need first steps. I am a mechanic but dont quite understand the electronics side of things yet.
To those of you who know what to do, what info is needed from my vehicle to get this ball rolling?
OP Just follow the doc that’s out there already for the doing a TCU upgrade, you’ll need an H or J series. The 4G unit used by 2017/2018 Fusion Platinum(s) was an HS7T-14G229-MR
Ok, so a jl3t-14g087-c will do the trick as described in the forum post i read with recycled parts. Thanks for your input, when i do this upgrade ill be back im sure.
That’ll work, the 2018 MKZ came with a JL3T, you’ll want to use the AB from one that’s close to you have (hybrid or EB).
The main difference between the H & J other than the dual PIFA antenna ports is that the J can give you TPMS pressure as well.
Looking at the 3G upgrade CSP doc that Ford had running for a bit, they were using H series for those in the 2016/2017 MKZ.
There are a few HL3T14G229AP out on eBay.
TCU’s are in general platform agnostic, some features may or may not work depending on whether or not everything required for the feature is in the car (eg the IPC/cluster firmware level).
The AsBuilt carries the config for the module, so while I can drop a JL3T in from an F150 into a Fusion Hybrid it will not know how to send warnings to FordPass for say a high voltage battery problem (the F150 doesn’t have one), so I would need to use the AsBuilt from a 2019 Fusion Hybrid (which has the required config and blocks) to actually getting it to work right.
In your case, as your factory AB is for a 3G TCU, you can’t drop that in so you need one for a 4G unit.
The MKZ and the Fusion are the same platform, so if I were dropping in an H series I would use the AB from a 2017/2018 Fusion Platinum (these came with an H), with a J series I would start with one from a 2018 MKZ (which came with a J) as a base.
