2017 lincoln MKX 3G to 4G tcu upgrade

check if you can find a GWM that supports HS4 CAN then swapping the GWM will allow the TCU communicate with the car using HS4 as L series firmware use HS4 CAN

2017 MKX doesn’t support HS4
He needs to be in either an H or J series TCU.
He needs to do a custom load to downgrade the firmware to J from an L series.
Load would be JL3T-14G141-AA/JL3T-14G139-CT/JL3T-14G144-CT

You also have to have a GWM that has HS4 to get anything to work on that Canbus line. In most cases you can’t just add this either as the signals have to be routed based on the Calibration instructions through the GWM.

And there’s also the issue of needing a K APIM or higher with HS4 enabled and the additional pins there connected back to the GWM.

So, for the sake of not going any further down the rabbit hole of switching out more modules, i ended up getting ahold of a K-series tcu and downgrading firmware to J. I want to thank everyone for the advice and help

You saved yourself a lot of time for sure.

I have seen that 2019-2020 Fusion have L series TCU and I have checked that their GWM has HS4 capability which is easy job to do if you have 2013-2018 Fusion and you want to use an L or K series TCU, you would just swap the GWM from 2019-2020 Fusion. It could be a smilar case for Lincoln…

You’re stuck in a loop here.
There’s more than just the GWM involved if someone tries to add HS4 to use a K/L series TCU, they’ll have FordPass issues if they don’t also have an HS4 compatible APIM and the wiring between that and the GWM.
When doing mods its best to keep the changes needed to get the mod done to a minimum so that you don’t introduce other issues.

And to add to Warlock a lot of other calibrations are different in other modules so it knows to route the data to HS4 so the TCU receives it. It’s not a plug and play thing.

I was abel to get the k series to work with the firmware downgrade and have all functions in lincoln connect, well except for what i assume is DTE. All other functions work.

Normal DTC if you didn’t put a second PIFA antenna on the beige port is one for an open antenna.
Contrary to what some folks believe, per F150Chief its a second cell antenna, not the WiFi hotspot antenna

To clarify i meant this. Its the only thing not working in lincoln way. The dtc definetly does pop up but as it not one that sets a check engine light and doesnt keep the TCU from functioning as i need it to, its not a big worry

It can take a while to fully check everything in.
What did you use as a source for the TCU config?
You might want to compare/use one from a 2019 Edge.

Swiped the asbuilt from a 2018 lincoln mkx using fords vin lookup tool. Firmware if i remember correctly was the jl3t CT revision

This issue has been talked about alot. Some have gone very deep into trying to figure this out.

It’s a question of the DTC.
If you’re doing an upgrade from a G/H series you only have one factory PIFA antenna, which means most folks leave the cream/beige connector open.
You get a DTC on the TCU for open antenna port 2 because of this.

I have the same problem in my Fusion. Though I am using a J series TCU. I have some DTC in my IPC I thought that would the cause but I never bothered about not having DTE.

I have both antennas conneced and no DTC in my TCU but still don’t have DTE in fordpass

To be clear, im not honestly worried about much of it at this point, ive got the functionality that I desire. If not having DTE and having a DTC that i cannot see without hooking an OBD reader up to it is the trade off, im all good. My new problem to fix is unfortunately not one for this forum. Though if anyone knows a good place to start for a rather persistent P0430 code i would appreciate it

My guess is that you’ll need to do an IPC update just like what has to be done with a 2013-2016 Fusion.
The actual Ford update kit for the MKX uses an H series, so you may be running into some type of pre-req, the doc for the update kit also calls out disabling/enabling valet mode after the install is completed for some reason.
