2017 Mustang GT NonPP car to install PP EPAS PSCM Rack

Hi All,

I believed my steering rack to be the cause of some cluncking over low speed bumps. In my search to figure out which to replace it with a few websites showed mutiple steering racks that are compatible. (I have later learned about Ford Parts direct site and VIN matching…) The rack I chose was because the description only differed on the racks by wheelsize. I have aftermarket wheels so I chose the rack that was the best match.

After installing and using ForScan to load AB data and Firmware I continue to get a fault. It will clear and reappear each time I restart the car. U3000:49-8B. It prevents me from selecting steering modes in the dash as well as driving modes.

I have figured out that the rack I bought matches cars with the Performance Package from the factory. My car was not a performance package car. I did look around and found the VIN of a car that would be a match to this rack.

Is there anything I can do to make this rack work correctly?

In searching the 4 corners of the internet I found a place that seems to know about this fault, but they don’t have a presence in the US. ZH Master Steering - EPS Test System

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Did you use Forscan to run a PMI after you swapped it?

It’s not just the rack, likely. Check other modules for DTC’s as they may require firmware updates to support the PP level. You must perform a PMI like Bill stated.

Yes, I believe I did what is considered PMI. I loaded the AB, and then loaded the Firmware for Strategy, Calibration, and ECU Config. I then did a module reset for PSCM. Am I missing something?

No other DTC’s exist. But I see what you’re saying. Maybe AB data on other modules need to be updated to work with the PP level steering rack? I’m not sure that firmware from one part number would work on the same part with different actual part number?

This is not the PMI process. It is in the Configuration and Programming tab at the top under PCM. You will see “Module initialization/relearn from Central Configuration”. That is the PMI procedure.

Your DTC will go away after PMI.

But the drive mode features may or may not work. Just a note…

Yes, I have also done that. For good measure I tried it again. Then cleared DTC’s. Once I cycle ignition the DTC is back.

Than follow F150Chiefs advice and see if there are firmware updates for the module.

You are clearing the DTC but until you do the PMI calibration it will be there again.

After doing Module initialization/relearn from Central Configuration is there anything else I need to do to complete PMI? I have done this and each time the DTC comes back after cycling the ignition.

Not 100% sure, but this indicates that you should look at a PP Mustang and compare the drivetrain associated module firmware to yours. Or the PMI is not working.

Usually when a Ford EPAS rack is replaced you have to run a steering angle sensor recalibration as well as loading the AB.
The AB settings you see in ForScan are just like the settings in the IPMA, not all of them are in the factory AB, they come from the calibration of the module.

I had a shop do an alignment and steering angle sensor recalibration yesterday. It did not help to clear the code.

Is the U3000:49-8B fault in the PSCM? If not what module is this fault in?

Was this a used item you bought?

This DTC comes up as an internal module failure. That means you got a bad one and it needs to be replaced.

I purchased a brand new one. Yes, the DTC is in the PSCM.
