Hi all… 1st post. I’m not necessarily new to modding infotainment systems but I am new to Ford. I have succesfully updated my Sync 3 in my 2017 Platinum to the latest Sync 3.4 and have jailbroken and modded with a few things from another website. I can’t get the logos for radio stations to work and I’m thinking that the APIM software needs to be updated? I have read that it can get bricked, so I’m on the fence. If I do update it would I get to see radio logos that are broadcast or would that not be available? I know I need to scan with Forscan to see which APIM is installed in order to proceed at all. I understand that there are some APIM in newer vehicles that are better to update than others, not sure what is considered newer. There’s no point if it doesn’t matter and I can’t get the logos to work.
2nd question is if I update the TCU could I get the FordPass app to show my tire pressure? I have searched a lot and it seems that the 2017 doesn’t have this, but I’m reading that you all have gotten other features to work.. so I don’t know if it’s a limitation of the TCU hardware or if the software can be updated to show this information.
I appreciate all the knowledge that’s been shared here and any insight you might have. Thanks and happy holidays!
H series TCU will not pass the TPMS even with the firmware to current level.
J series will.
I’ve never seen AM/FM/HD stations pass logos here in the NA, that’s usually a DAB feature.
Sirius logos are a matter of what’s canned in the current build of 3.4.x and what Sirius pushes as updates, non-X40 ACM will still allow the APIM to display the logos and would not require additional wiring.
Not being able to get logos isn’t a huge deal, if I can’t I can’t. Especially if NA can’t. I don’t use Sirius (although it has it), so I’m not too concerned then. Probably saves me from a bricked APIM anyway.
I will look into what it would take to swap out to a J series ECU. I would imagine any 2018-2020 would work? If you don’t know off hand no worries.
This is great. I did read a lot to get to this point, but then you get to the end of what is able to be googled and I just didn’t know. Appreciate your time.
2019/2020 can get you into a K or L series, those require much more work as you basically would have to do a custom firmware downgrade to make them a J series.
Look for F150Chief’s guide for info on putting a donor TCU in factory mode so that it can be activated for your vehicle.
I have looked and looked… I’ve searched his name along with TCU along with JL3T-14G087-CF (which seems to be what he uses). I’m coming up empty. Sorry.
Reading, reading, reading.. I don’t believe my 2017 has hot spot, and this looks like it has the 2 antennas. Does this mean I either need to get another antenna or deal with a DTC?
The cream color isn’t for the hotspot, its for a 2nd cell antenna.
It will work without it, you’ll just have a DTC for an open secondary antenna. The cheap Bing Fu units won’t clear the DTC because the resistance is less than a Ford PIFA unit.
Ordered. I will read a bunch more before trying the install. Thanks for the link. Do you by chance have F150Chiefs TCU upgrade thread on hand (as mentioned here)? I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
