APIM Identification

I am looking to update my daughter’s 2018 Ford Escape SE AWD from SYNC 3.0 to 3.4. Is there a way to tell what vintage APIM is in the Escape without cracking into the dashboard with partial disassembly? I am almost positive it is NOT a MY20 APIM due to the year of the vehicle, 2018, but I do not want to brick the APIM if by some chance it happens to be a MY20 unit. Any help/advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

If you’ve had the car since day one odds are its a 2017 H or 2018 J.

  1. use the interrogator, what is in the car now?
  2. If it was ever replaced by a dealer you can pull the AsBuilt for the car from Ford’s site ( https://www.motorcraftservice.com/Asbuilt/ ) and look toward the end of the 7D0 line and see what the internal part number is.

The Sync 3 system in Ford vehicles has a hidden menu that can be accessed for diagnostic and customization purposes. To enter this menu, you need to press and hold the “Next Track” button on the steering wheel and the “Next Track” button below the infotainment screen simultaneously for about 8 seconds. This will initiate a speaker test, which you can cancel, the hidden menu will appear. Within this menu, you can go to the Bezel Diagnostics menu. Select APIM/Part Numbers. You will see a screen like this…

You are interested in the Assembly Part Number and the H/W Part Number.

Thanks, I found that hidden menu! Here is what I found. Based on this info, I am assuming that I do not have a MY20 APIM and can proceed with the SYNC 3.4 update?

Not MY20+. You can reformat…
