That error is related to hash checking, so a generic drive as you are using may be the cause.
To rule that out, use a quality branded USB pendrive (no disk, no SD). If you check the log, your computer is seeing a generic device… That and “a potato” or “something” are basically the same.
Also, do you have a picture of the about sync section prior the upgrade attempt?
Your current status is the red screen at random files, right?
