is this the beginning of the end of their GPS system? do you think it is possible to have a workaround with an alternative application?

Pretty much how it’s been in the US. We dont get traffic info unless we subscribe to Sirius or use Carplay or Android Auto.
a priori, it is no longer possible to subscribe. yes it forces you to use another gps application than the embedded system. it is therefore no longer of interest to update the gps and the maps of the car.
