Navigation is not Functioning properly

I have seen a lot of these errors, mine is a bit different. i get the message when i start the car, by the time i click the OK the navigation is working fine, this only happens when starting. makes no difference cold or hot. tried 2 different GPS antennas thinking that was the issue. I don’t see an option in Forscan to delay the message from coming up.

When you start the vehicle is it in a garage or under a carport?

There is no delay for the message. The message is being set because the GPS is not locking immediately or there is an issue with the present map installation.

This is a 2011 Explorer?
Obviously a Sync 3 retrofit. Was the vehicle originally equipped with Sync 2?
Has this issue been persistent since Oct 2021?
What is the year or part number of he replacement Sync 3 APIM?

I am not clear on what errors you are seeing. Maybe add pics of them if you can? It’s clearly a retrofit as the 11 was MFT. What trim level do you have? Is this a 4" upgrade from a non SYNC system? Also are you referring to the GPS module behind the gauge cluster or the additional one you need for Sync 3?

Yes, this is a 2011 Explorer limited. I did the upgrade myself. 20 year mechanic.
this is happening anywhere when i start the car. I don’t park in garage or have a car port. I did upgrade from SyncII MyFord system. the error has been happening since i went from 3.0 to 3.4, but i did the upgrade right after the install and can’t confirm it wasn’t there before. the Sync3 unit came from a 2018 Explorer limited. thanks for helping with this.

Hi Bill,
this is a limited explorer. had MFT Sync II and the additional one I added when I install the new unit. I had thought about changing out the original antenna but that looks to be an expensive and timely endeavor.

The asbuilt you sent is for the whole vehicle in its original state. But based on this I’m going to guess that the 2011 Explorer was not sold in the US, or the NAV TYPE value was changed. This is odd, but the vehicle could have been a US export vehicle for overseas markets. The NAV TYPE value is set for NNG maps, which are ROW-NNG, not US (or NA). This needs to be changed from NNG to Telenav. This setting being wrong will cause all kinds of issues with the NAV system as far as destination location, searches, etc.

EDIT: I did a VIN lookup and found the vehicle was originally sold in the US and not export. The NAV TYPE value in the original asbuilt is correct for SYNC 2.

Change 0403 0000 02E3 to 0203 0000 02E1.

This should fix the message, as the setting is wrong for a NA vehicle with Sync 3 NAV.

When you change this value in FORScan you will need to do a master reset of the Sync APIM for the setting to be enabled. Save the APIM asbuilt and post it here. BTW, I edited your VIN on the post.

Thanks, looks like F150chief is on the case. Sounds like some Asbuilt stuff may need to be changed. I suspected this as I have had the same thing happen.

On the Antenna the one behind the Gauge cluster is fine and just leave it alone. The Sync 3 system does not rely on this. It uses a new antenna what plugs into the Blue plug in the back of the APIM which I am guessing you bought. I can tell you that you can use the Oem Shark fin antenna off the 17+ Explorer and it is pretty easy to swap. If you do use that than you will want the jumper wire for that line that runs across the bottom of the Glove box. This new wire splits the Sat signal between Sirius and Nav. It will have the Blue plug you need for the APIM and is the OEM way to do it. I did this and prefer it to the Chinese garbage you can buy on Amazon. I have had much better results on my Explorer this way.

Hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you. The settings were correct in the APIM. I had to adjust them when I downloaded the original

The asbuilt looks good. I don’t see anything that would cause the message or delay.

Did you disconnect the original GPSM (antenna) when you upgraded to Sync 3?

I didn’t disconnect the original GPSM antenna. I was wondering about that , didnt see anything in any of the instructions I followed while installing. I can certainly find and disconnect it if you think that may fix the issue.

The GPSM antenna is typically under the dash in front of the instrument cluster or toward the center of the dash. You might be able to reach it from the APIM area. If both antennas are connected for GPS, there could be conflicting messages on the CANBUS which could cause the APIM NAV not to lock immediately.

@bill32399 might know…he is familiar with Explorers.

The GPSM is behind the gauge cluster to the top on the 11-15 Explorer. I currently have both antenna active on mine since the TCU relies on the original GPSM to function on CGEA 1.2 for location services. If the APIM is setup right than it won’t broadcast the info on the bus from the new Antenna. If it does you will get a conflict for sure.

I have had the same errors as you have, and I found it was a bad Sync 3 GPS unit that I got with my upgrade kit.

Same as a 2015 F150. When Sync 3 was introduced they switched to the newer GPS antennas. I have mine connected for the IP compass to work. No issues.

@bill32399 Would changing the Clock Master from 21 to 29 (APIM to BCM) help this or just not work?
