North America Map update on 2020 Fusion with My20

Hi guys,

I just want to confirm that there is no way to update to the latest N/A maps other than paying for them.
2020 Ford Fusion energi in Canada
Obviously MY20

It looks like this is the only way, from what I can tell.

FMods universal reformater will let you do it with a full reformat.
The APIM has to be jail broken first.

Thank you!

Im so sorry to even ask, as I’m usually pretty good at following directions.
No issue with the jailbreak, or extracting map files.

In the video, suddenly autoinstall.sh comes out of seemingly nowhere. I have been thru the instructions a few times, and can’t find it.

I’m not sure if you have done this yourself or not, but if you have…Where is that autoinstall.sh file?

EDIT: Found it. FMods - Login

I just needed to expand the explanation at the bottom of the utube video.

Know what you mean on that one, you’re not the first one to stumble on that.
I’ve not done the map only replacement process on a MY2020, so let us know how long that takes.
I usually just use the universal reformatter when I’m prepping APIMs for an Sync3 MY2020 upgrade.

Thank you. I saw that, then saw the warnings in the youtube video not to reformat or the device would be bricked. Not knowing which info was the most up to date, I opted for the safewr method.

I tried to be lazy wiht jailbreaking the device, and quickly found that forscan is an absulute must in rebooting the AIPM at the correct time. Worked first time using the correct tool. Go figure.

File extraction took a bit of time, but was pretty easy when following along with two monitors. You already know about the file I couldn’f find.

Next epic fail was that I started the upgrade on a 15 minute drive. Left the car ‘running’ when I returned home (It’s an Energi) to complete the upgrade. Car had shut off when checked an hour later. Full map upgrade was not complete.

This morning, I find out that the reason for the shut down was a drained battery (The small AGM battery). I left the charger on the battery this morning, starting the upgrade process again (Taking a different vehicle to work).

Hopefully at least 1 other person learns from this error, At least I learned that either driving, or using a charger is recommended for a very good reason.

I will report back on this tonight, hopefully with a complete map upgrade.

2020 Fusion doesn’t have an factory AGM, a Walmart EverStart H5 will fit it you want to put one in.
Turn off the 30 minute idle timer before you start if you’re going to get the cat sit in the driveway during the update.

Thank you. I spent time re-setting the bcm, and trying a battery tender tonight. The battery is done. I see now its not AGM, and you confirm it. It looks like Factory battery is group size 90, and the H5 is group 47. I’ll follow your lead on the battery. Verify Your Identity

Back to the map update. My first attempt is a fail. I ended up with the gps location, but no maps overlay. I’m wondering if the youtube video is just out of date. I think I’ll start from the beginning, and try once more with the map extraction method before I ask for help on your method of bypassing the esn lock on the maps.
I did notice the only way I could download the esn locked maps was to go in to advanced, and tell Syn3 Updater to bypass the My20 issue. This isn’t in the video, and makes me wonder.

The first two things that come to mind are did you do a master reset afterwards and/or did you run the map wipe again prior re-running the map reload?

Yes, I did run the map wipe again before re-loading the maps.
Interesting thing…I pulled the negative off the battery and its fine. Ok, so I put the battery back in with a full charge and do a master reset.

Now, I get the Ford display on boot of the APIM, then it shuts its self off.

I’ll try a forscan reset. Then I’ll try creating full package files without the jailbreak and see if I can get the APIM to take the programming.

The good news is I don’t need a battery.

Forscan did the job. APIM is back. I seem to be where I was before with no maps. I’m currently checking to make sure the electronics think the bqttery is ok and there is no strange load happening. So now, I’m at a cross roads…Do I just load the maps and see where I end up (Making sure the apim does not get shut down part way thru upgrade)? I think this is what I’m going to try next.

I updated the maps, and the display said to remove USB. Took hours. Then, the display showed navigation fault. No problem, I did a master reset.

Then I nede forscan to remove DTC’s and the display came up with the 2024 maps! lifes good!!

Takeaway? Ensure you don’t let the car shut off or battery go dead.

Thanks for the walk through. I may do this on my 2020+ APIM also.

After doing 4 reformats on L series using FMODS today I have no problems using this method, compared with the time it took for me to downgrade my L3LT (FRND marked as opposed to GR26A) to 3.3 so that I could then reformat it doing with updater. The FMODS takes about 15 minutes less time.

You have to jailbreak it anyway to do the map removal, so its not really more steps. The biggest thing with their Universal Reformatter is patience, sometimes you pop in the USB and it takes 3 minutes before the script message pops up, other times its 5-7 minutes, after that its 25 or so minutes with a good USB.

This is working perfectly for me.
I was obviously concerend that I made a mess when the apim shut down due to low battery. FORscan is a lide saver.

I think the map update took about 3 hours to upload, not sure if thats just my expreience.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. You guys are awesome, and have been so helpful!

Anytime you pull the battery cable to try and force a reset you need to leave it off for ~30 minutes.
APIM takes 15-20 to discharge so that you get a reset, BCM/TCU and the rest take right at 30-35 minutes.
Hence the reason the ForScan module reboot worked for you.
