Hi all I hope you had a good Xmas!
This is a bit of a read and a continuation from something I’ve brought up before however I’ve started from the beginning and given you a complete rundown of everything to date including my interactions with Ford over it.
Ok so new year, still have Issues, Ford not able to fix it and have no ideas so i will detail everything and see if anyone can help.
My 2022 Torneo Custom new Ex-Uk was purchased by me direct from Ford, they tell me it was produced April 2022 based on the VIN. Anyway when it got to NZ from Ford UK after it had structural mods made to convert it from a swb bus to a mobility van carried out by a company in the UK under license from Ford UK (so it was done Property as Ford sell these themselves in the UK but FordNZ do not sell them here YET hence I had to get one from the UK). Anyway it arrived In the country and of course The first thing I noticed was the clock was wrong because the SYNC system and APIM (16 GB non-NAV unit) Was configured for the UK so I had Ford NZ connect it to FDRS and reset the region so that The clock was reading correct-I have no idea what they changed I can only assume the region code But regardless they sorted it really quick and everything seem to work fine. After a bit of sniffing on the Internet I came across this site and the SYNC updater, and also FORscan (Which I have not used) And realised that there’s actually a lot of things we can do away from the corporate monster For example a simple update of the firmware/Software/whatever running The SYNC syatem (And a lot more via FORscan i notice), But my initial issue was I noticed there was about eight version updates (at the time i first looked-I believe there’s more now) for SYNC newer than the version mine had on it (3.4.21194) And whilst I was happy with the way the system was working for the Better part I noticed a few issues when I was close to 5G Cell phone towers, Primarily the map would freeze (apple carplay map), The unit would become unresponsive any music playing would stop and it would just lock up and stay that way for a couple of minutes after which time the system realised it obviously had an issue and restarted itself and providing I was suitably far enough away from The 5G source the unit with act normal. Long story short I’ve been trying to update SYNC ever since initially I asked Ford NZ If they could perform the update when doing the Next service. The Service came and went and Ford were not able to get the unit to update they tried multiple times apparently but there was no way the SYNC system Was allowing an update. I put a post on here got some info about things to check for etc, Ended up creating interrogator USB which is when I discovered my 16 GB “NON – NAV” Unit had a rather large partition on the APIM that I can only can assume contains maps going by the sheer size of it.
I asked a few more questions on here and tried an install myself to see what error code came up, As it may have given some clues what the problem was- I got MEM-ERR1 and MEM-ERR3 So even though the interrogator was telling me that The Temporary memory wasn’t the issue it was still refusing to update , So I tried removing Gracenote just to be sure and it made no difference because the APIM Appears to be big enough being 16 GB.
Since my last posting here late last year seeking ideas and advice I have gone back to The Guy at Ford HQ here in NZ Who is the expert with all things SYNC/APIM/telematics etc related as he was the one that changed the region on the vehicle in the first place and he is at a loss to explain to me why it won’t accept and update ,and also he’s gone further and contacted Ford UK To ask them for ideas since it was Brand-new UK version and it seems nobody can explain anything however they are quick to tell me that my modem won’t work because the SIM card is different in Europe to the ones here, And that if I want to spend NZ$2000 on a brand new NZ APIM it will fix the issue, However given we have tools like FORscan at our disposal, along with the wealth of Info and brains here in this community I figure whilst I cant just “Format” the APIM And reinstall the correct packages for the Non-Nav unit it is, surely there must be a way I can “Un-Corrupt” this APIM that appears to have come from factory with major issues? Oh, and before you say “warranty job”, Ford NZ will not warranty my van as it is what they call a “Grey import” meaning they never supplied it, so my issue is with Ford UK, but they do not wanna know know its left the UK!!
To add insult to injury too it was one of the vans that left the factory with faulty AGM batteries fitted and almost bang on 18 months after I got it, sure enough they failed, costing NZ1200 to replace the pair because not even my 3rd party warranty will cover them, and whilst Ford NZ know all about the battery issue and replaced heaps under warranty in NZ new ones, they wont cover mine!
So my Question to the most Skilled of you out there is this- can this MY2020+ APIM somehow be wiped and have its correct “as built” firmware put on it so that it will then let me update SYNC etc, or should I just bite the bullet and replace the APIM with a NZ new one the same size if i can get a 16gb non nav unit for AU/NZ market models.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and all suggestions are welcomed and once the topic is created I will upload screenshots of the interrogator for those who want to see what’s on it but it is very strange and personally I hold Ford responsible for what was probably a factory screwup but I will never know.
Cheers everyone
