SYNC In-Vehicle Software Update (IVSU) File Naming Convention

SYNC In-Vehicle Software Update (IVSU) File Naming Convention

As with the standard Ford part number format, the part numbers for the Sync application software, voice, navigation, and other files are formatted into 3 sections. However, there are several differences from the standard Ford part number format in the prefix and suffix definitions.

NOTE: This information is for the Sync software and navigation files and does not apply to the Sync firmware files.

Prefix-Base Part Number-Suffix (xxxx-xxxxxx-xxx)

Prefix:

The first 4 characters of the part number are defined as the part number prefix. The typical prefix codes found in the Sync software files include GB5T, HB5T, HN1T, JL1T, JL7T, JR3T, 1U5T, 2U5T, 4U5T, and 5U5T. The layout of the prefix is:

  • The 1st character of the prefix indicates the year of initial release.
  • The 2nd and 3rd character of the prefix indicates the product that the part was originally designed. Ford uses products designed for one model across other applicable models in the product lines.
  • The 4th character indicates the design responsibility, and whether it is product engineering or service part.

For the Sync 3.0 (Pre-MY 18.5) application software, voice, navigation, and other system files these are:

  • GB5T = 2015
  • HB5T = 2016
  • HN1T = 2016
  • JL1T = 2016
  • JL7T = 2016
  • JR3T = 2017

For the Sync 3.2+ (MY18.5+) application software, voice, navigation, and other system files these are:

  • 1U5T = 2017
  • 2U5T = 2017
  • 4U5T = 2018
  • 5U5T = 2019

Base Part Number:

The next 6 characters are defined as the base part number. The base part numbers included in the Sync software numbering are:

  • 14G381 = Sync application files.
  • 14G391 = Sync system voice files.
  • 14G421 = Navigation map files.
  • 14G422 = Navigation voice files.
  • 14G423 = Gracenote files.
  • 14G424 = Navigation map license files.
  • 14G386 thru 14G387 = APIM system utility files.
  • 14G658 = Radio logo files. (EU only)

Suffix:

The last 2 or 3 characters are defined as the part number suffix, which will generally indicate the regional use and revision of the files.
The layout of the suffix for 2 characters used for system related files:

  • Region, area, or language of the intended software distribution or use.
  • Revision level of the software.

The layout of the suffix for 3 characters used for navigation related files:

  • Region, area, or language of the intended software distribution or use.
  • The incremental file or portion of the file set.
  • Revision level of the software.

As outlined above, the suffix will indicate the regional use and revision of the files. There are many versions of the files for worldwide use defined in the file structure. In this explanation we will combine the base part number with the suffix to illustrate the part number structure. We will focus on the first letter of the suffix for the Sync system files, and the first and second letters of the suffix for the navigation related files.

Sync Application and Related System Files

14G381-xx = Sync Application Files

There are no regional definitions for the Sync application file since it is universal, however, there are separate files for screen format. For the most recent versions of the Sync application, from 1U5T, the following suffix designations have been used.

  • For 6.5/8.0/10.0” screen formats:
    xxxx-14G381-Ax
    xxxx-14G381-Cx
    xxxx-14G381-Ex
  • For 4.2” screen formats:
    xxxx-14G381-Bx
    xxxx-14G381-Dx
    xxxx-14G381-Fx

14G391-xx = Sync Application Voice Files

The Sync application system voice is used on Nav and Non-Nav equipped APIM’s. The files below are based on stock (OEM) APIM devices that have NOT been modified or reformatted to run Sync 3.4 software.
NOTE: If you are running Sync 3.4 application software on an 8GB non-Nav APIM, you must use a smaller regional voice file to use Gracenote.

Sync 3 Onboard Navigation System

The onboard navigation system is hosted on the Sync APIM platform and is not part of the Sync software, although it is integrated to the Sync application. The Sync user can interface to the navigation application using the touchscreen or voice prompts. The Sync software can save certain data like destinations, etc., separately from the navigation application. Sync navigation is supplied by two companies: Telenav and NNG.
