Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this community. I’m trying to figure out whether I can add an APIM to my 2015 TC XLT Wagon which I don’t believe has one. It has the 4-inch display with no phone connectivity. Would be great if I can get a larger screen while I’m at it. It has manual HVAC controls currently.
I downloaded the asbuilt from Motorcraft based on my vin, below is the html version.
Really just trying to figure out what my options are and a shopping list for the junk yard. Any guidance is appreciated.
You can retrofit Ford Sync 3 into a 2015 Transit Connect using a wiring kit from several vendors. Or, you can do the wiring yourself but it’s not a small task. As far as the Sync 3 functionality, not everything will be supported, especially in later versions for Sync 3.4, compatibility wise anyways. Overall the swap will work fine.
I suggest you look into articles on the Transit forums specifically for your vehicle. There would be specific information about the addition or swap of Sync 3 into a Transit Connect and the required programming. Although you will need to acquire the wiring from someone to do this, you can purchase the other parts such as the APIM, ACM, Etc., likely significantly cheaper than from the kit folks.
Based on what I’ve read so far it seems that all 2014-2018 TC’s in NA use the IPC as the gateway for CAN. I guess that means getting parts from 2019 or newer might mean that I’d need to also add a dedicated gateway module, which might not be feasible.
I see a lot of different wiring harnesses on ebay and amazon but nothing really specific to Transit Connect. Since it is built on the same C1/B platform as Focus, C‑Max, and Fiesta, I guess I should be looking for harnesses compatible with those vehicles (that are CGEA 1.2). My last question is whether the fact that my vehicle has an OEM rear camera makes a difference and if I should use this as an opportunity to upgrade the rear camera since it looks like crap.
This is the CGEA 1.2 network you have. It will only use the IPC for the ICAN network. The MS and HS networks come from the BCM. There is no gateway module and you cannot add one. The module calibrations would not talk correctly if you plug one in.
You are partially correct on parts from a CGEA 1.3 network working on a CGEA 1.2 network. Some modules will without problem but MOST will not. The small amount that do work allow the AB to be changed to 1.3 and that is why. When I say small amount I mean like 2 or 3 modules.
Found a 2014 TC with 6.5” screen. Got the APIM, Screen, FCIM, Bezel, Bracket, Center Dash Cover, CD Player and Instrument Panel.
Was unable to get the steering wheel or clockspring due to being out of town without all my tools. Will any steering wheel from a Sync 3 Focus/ Escape/ C-Max/ Fiesta/ Fusion work or do I need to find another 2014-2017 TC with right hand steering wheel buttons?
Besides steering wheel and maybe clockspring I still need the USB 3.0 cable and hub that goes in front of cup holders next to E-Brake. I think I can buy that new for reasonable price though.
Anything else I need besides harness? I’ve looked around on Transit Connect Forums about buying or making one. It seems like getting a cheap one with all the connectors and rewiring it if necessary is the best compromise between expense and effort.
The only other thing I can think of is a GPS antenna but I’m not planning to use built in navigation and that’s the only thing that it’s needed for to my knowledge.
