I just got a 2017 Ford Explorer with Sync3 without Nav. It had version 2.2.16280 which I manged to update to 3.0.20204 today using a USB and the files downloaded from Ford, which at least got Sync3 to try using AndroidAuto.
I’m a long-time computer geek but I know just enough about all this to know that it still isn’t working right. My major goal would be to get Google Maps working through it then see which other apps might be useful.
My phone (Samsung S10e) works with Sync3 for audio and phone functions. The USB connection works and bluetooth pairing works, but I can’t get AndroidAuto to work.
AndroidAuto on the phone says it is connected to the Ford Explorer. Sync3 says it is trying to connect to the phone but it never does.
I want to try to get the Ford Official 3.0.20204 working before I think about 3.4.xxxxx
SYNC Region: NA
Navigation Variant: Non Nav
Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20
Install Type: OEM
Old SYNC Version: 2.2.16280
New SYNC Version: 3.0.20204
Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
none
Hi I had same issue after update, just 1h ago😁
In my case problem was in phone not sync.
In your phone go to settings/applications/android auto/memory, and on bottom tap the “clear data” and “clear cache”. After that my phone connect to sync immediately.
Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve tried three different cables (discovered one was charging only, but the other two work fine for data between my phone and computer). I’m thinking it might be some problem with my phone but I don’t have enough time for troubleshooting thoroughly because we are a one-car family right now. I need to try with another phone to see if it does the same thing.
Part of the problem is that I don’t really know exactly what Sync3 in a 2017 Ford ought to be doing. Phone and SMS work great, but so far I have not been able to get any apps to do anything. I did get Google Maps to give the voice directions through Sync, but I think that was entirely as “audio” rather than the app.
I encountered similar connectivity problems. Optimal performance requires a cable length of no more than three feet; exceeding this length resulted in connection failure. Resolution necessitated updating to Sync version 3.4 and reinstalling the AA application on my mobile device.
This wasn’t exactly the solution, but it did lead me to solving the problem.
I looked for the setting you mentioned and didn’t find exactly that but I did find an option to delete all updates and return to factory version of AndroidAuto. I figured I had nothing to lose so I clicked on it.
The phone reverted to the factory version of AndroidAuto, then when I plugged it in to the car, the phone said “Updating” and “AndroidAuto will open when update completes” – when AndroidAuto opened it said something telling me to check the screen on the car. Everything connected and it is working.
The only remaining issue is probably my own choices. The map display from AndroidAuto is mostly gray and pretty dim, but I think that is probably because I have Sync3 set to use the Night display all the time because I like it better than the daytime display for Sync3. Next time I have a while to tinker with it I’m going to try changing the settings to see what works best.
