Updating Sync 3.3 to 3.4

I want to update my sync system to the latest version but I’m worried about bricking it. I’ve run the interrogation tool and it told me that I don’t have the MY20 system, but if the APIM is newer then this info might not be accurate. My APIM model number is 4U5T-14G371-GFA, can anyone tell me if I’m safe to update it? Ford also has this listed as 2019 on their web page when I input my VIN number

SYNC Region: EU

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: 2020

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 3.3.18351

New SYNC Version: 3.3.18351

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
I haven’t updated the system yet

If you’re not doing the maps no reformat is required to go from 3.3x to 3.4.x
Pulling down the update from Ford using your VIN if your car came with 3.2.x+ is the path fully supported by Ford.

As this is an EU NAV have you checked to see if maps are free in your country?

Fords web site is telling me that there is no update available even though I’m still running the original sync 3.3 and maps version F8. I have heard that some MY20 versions have been bricked with the latest update. Ford have disabled updates for my car.

The interrogation tool is telling me that mine is not a MY20 version and I’ve also searched the assembly part number from my Sync 3 system on this site and that also tells me that mine is not a MY20 version.

The only way I can get it updated is from this site but I want to be 100% sure before attempting it

You have a 2020 model vehicle. Assume it is a 2020+ APIM and do not reformat. Like Warlock has said you can still update without doing a reformat. The only 100% way to know is to remove the APIM and look at the date on the sticker.

You have not indicated what map version you have right now so it is hard to say if there is a newer version for you. The most recent one has only been released in the US so far.

He’s got F8 based on the above post which means this hasn’t been touched since it was new

Bill, just do a version only upgrade with MY2020 protection enabled, that will get you to you to 3.4.23188.

Thank you for the advice. So is it the map update that bricks the system and not the 3.4 sync software?

TBF, I prefer to use Android auto and Google maps rather than the ford navigation but I think I must have OCD when it comes to making sure all my software is up to date. Is 3.4 much of an improvement over 3.3? I know it’s visually different but what else apart from that?

The part that bricks the APIM is the reformat that’s required to install new maps without paying Ford for them.

3.4.x is cleaner, a bit faster and has the back end support added for the current BlueTooth standard.

So, just to be clear, i can download the latest 3.4 but don’t update the maps?

Do it in autoinstall mode?

Correct

Out of curiosity, how did you reach that conclusion?.
Ty.

Assuming he put the real info in…

Oh I see… I asked because the APIM is not MY20, so I was a little confused…

I’m not so sure about his profile…

As far as we know, yes, it should be safe.

It’s up to you to proceed under your own responsibility, but based on the available information we have you should be fine.
