2015 Transit Non Sync to Sync 3 Retrofit Issue

Hey guys, so as you might remember from my last post I ended up retrofitting sync 3 to my non sync transit, so far I have everything wired up except the microphone, rear cam, and USB media + usb media power/ground. I can see the APIM in forscan on the HS network just fine and the sync 3 boots up and will work for a split second but then will show a black screen saying “vehicle network communication error”

Do I have to change something in the BCM programming? also besides this I have to manually power on the sync 3. it’s getting GPS signal and outputs audio for the split second that it does work, and forscan communicates to the APIM no issue

I also notice that the blinker sound goes away from the gauge cluster when the sync is showing that message, could it be because I don’t have the upgraded gauge cluster with the color LCD display (that connects on the sync’s multimedia network) causing this issue? or is it becuase my BCM isn’t coded to have sync 3 (hence why it doesnt power up when i turn on the ignition)

I will upload the as built of the donor van and my van’s BCM if needed, I really am not sure what to do

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: Retrofit

Old SYNC Version: 3.4

New SYNC Version: 3.4

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
Vehicle network communication error

Update Method: Official Ford

These connect to the APIM.

Indeed, those I will connect once I figure out why the apim keeps saying vehicle network communication error

I wonder if location of where to tap the CAN hi and low affects it, since I tapped CAN at the OBD port since it was easily accessible, could it be that it’s not communicating with the BCM? I can access the APIM through forscan so it’s obviously on the network

I’m not sure if I have to modify the AS Built on the bcm to make it wake up with ignition since so far i have to manually turn it on

Here’s a picture comparing my BCM As-Built to the donor (2018 transit t-350 apim acm and screen) As-Built

EDIT 2: So I went back to the van just now and went into the BCM Main programming and selected hidden options (+2) and I found a bunch of options that let me choose 8” Navigation, etc anything relating to sync I selected as the option, and after that, I now have DTC from the IPC saying it lost communication with the FCDIM and lost communication to radio, so I suppose we’re getting somewhere… could it be that the HS-CAN lines that I tapped into at the OBD port are “outside” the BCM gateway and that’s why it’s technically not communicating with the rest of the van but the APIM is seen and can be configured on forscan? I might change the HS-Can tap location from at the OBD port to behind the IPC to see

Hey guys, so I would like to share my solution to the problem: I didn’t realize the IPC served as a gateway for the ACM and FCDIM and since I was going from basic AM/FM radio to SYNC 3 I had to create that I-CAN network myself, and It completely slipped my mind that I had to wire I-CAN to the IPC! I thought that was just to communicate between the SYNC and the color LCD IPC but I didn’t realize…

Anywho, SYNC 3 is now retrofitted successfully (I suppose you can say that) into a NON SYNC 2015 transit that came with the basic AM/FM radio! The only thing I need to do now is wire the microphone, reverse cam, and USB media hub. Once all that is finished up, I might move onto doing some other retrofits like the HID headlights, the facelift front end, image processing etc
