2016 F250 Navigation Fault after swap of Sync2 to Sync3 module

A couple of weeks ago, I swapped out the Sync2 module in our 2016 F250 with a Sync3 from eBay (China). Everything appears to be working except that I get a “Navigation Fault” almost every time I start the vehicle. After about 5 seconds, I can see the map load, and navigation appears to work fine. The unit came pre-loaded with build 3.4.23188, so I haven’t used the Cyan updater.

At the seller’s suggestion, I’ve tried a master reset and also tried adjusting the location of the GPS antenna. Even placing the antenna outside the vehicle doesn’t seem to make a difference. I also tried another antenna from Amazon ( Amazon.com ), but it doesn’t appear to work any better or worse than the one included with the unit.

I noticed on another thread that downgrading the build version might help. Has anyone tried that and had success clearing the Navigation Fault error? I’ve seen other threads claiming different antennas fixed the issue, but it doesn’t seem like a reliable solution.

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Nav 2 24

Manufacturer Year: Unknown

Install Type: Replica

Old SYNC Version: 3.4.23188?

New SYNC Version: 3.4.23188

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
Navigation Fault

Update Method: Unknown

Do you have a GPS error? Little red circle on the screen. If not, it’s not an antenna issue.

We have seen many of the Chinese counterfeit units exhibit this issue. Sometimes reformatting the unit will help. However, errors in asbuilt programming, which is likely with these, can cause the issue. This can be due to the wrong country code, etc.

Do you have a pic of the unit showing the part number?

I didn’t take a picture before installing, but I’ll grab one at some point. I believe after one of the “Master Resets”, I did see that red circle for a minute or two, but haven’t seen it since. I can’t remember if that was when I had the GPS unit behind the radio under the dash. Since then, I’ve routed it to the entertainment box on top of the dash.

Had a chance to snap a picture today. Seems like I’ll get one of three situations

  1. Navigation Fault popup window with a “close” button, map loads after a few seconds.
  2. Navigation Fault on the map screen that goes away after a few seconds.
  3. Map loads fine without error

This is a Chinese clone APIM. It is probally going bad. I could go on and on about all the faults in what I see in this pic.

But I wont becuse I dont want to help these scammers get better at hiding them.

That is counterfeit.

OK, thanks for the info. Trying to understand a little better what these units are exactly. I ran the Interrogator and got the following information:

  • APIM Model: HB5T-14G371-BAG

    APIM Type: Navigation

    APIM Size: 32GB

    APIM Free Space: 3.4G

    Version 3.4.23188 (NU5T-14G381-AD)

If Google AI can be trusted, it’s saying:

The HB5T-14G371-BAG (or HB5T14G371BAG) is a Genuine Ford Sync 3 Communication/Control Module primarily for 2017 Ford Escape and Ford Explorer vehicles.

So, are they taking older “OEM” units, modifying them in some way, then slapping fake stickers on the back? I figured I’d leave an eBay review, but I don’t want to make inaccurate statements or accuse them of false advertising if it’s my fault for not knowing the difference.

If anyone is curious, this is the eBay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/396660269119

Thanks again for the help and information.

They did not make an H series APIM in 2020. Those were 2016 & 2017 units. This right here tells you the sticker is false also.

That would have been a genuine number but it has been hacked.

Yeah, when I looked up that number, it seemed to belong to a variety of 2017-18 vehicles. But are you saying they just hack that number into the APIM and the whole thing is “fake”? It’s not a rebranded unit from 2017?

They are returned/faulty units that get thrown away. They do all kinds of frankenstiening to get them to work so they can sell them.
