2019 Lincoln Nav stuck at Please Insert USB Stick...

2019 Lincoln Navigator update started using a USB drive. It did accept the drive and rebooted, but when it came back up it said “Please insert USB Stick…” and it’s there since. I did find another member that had similar issues (maybe not on a Navigator) but they said they did a reset and got it working? I have also tried numerous USB drives (if there is a suggested model, let me know). I used a generic, a Verbatim and a Lexar. None are detected. I even tried a Samsung SSD with an adapter. I have a couple other things to try, but I’m perplexed as it detected the first drive and then, crickets…

I did also see a member suggest to replace the USB hub in the console and to beware of Chinese knock-offs. Is that a true solution?
I"m looking for all available options before I take it to the “stealer-ship” for a couple of recalls, and see if they can also fix this. Figured I better try upgrading before I take it in just in case. Lucky me!

Any and all help is appreciated! I hope to be one more successful upgrade case in the near future!
Thanks in advance!

[1/26/2025 10:47:14 PM] ALL FILES DOWNLOADED AND COPIED TO THE USB DRIVE SUCCESSFULLY!

Just an update. Used a drive with a LED light and on the top USB port of the hub the light does not come on for some time, about 10 seconds, then comes on. NO flashing (pulsating) light like it’s being read. It shuts off about 6 seconds later. Then comes back on about 8-10 seconds later. Bottom port the drive stays on… nothing happens. I’m curious if it could indeed be the USB hub as one suggested. I don’t know that they replaced it and it worked though. I think they were lucky from a “random” insert on a drive and it fired off. May have been a different USB as well. Thoughts?

You can’t use a USB drive you must use a thumb drive.

Forgive me, but I think the USB drive I’m using is a thumb drive. Plainly, a USB stick.

I was just going off what your install log said.

Sure! I also tried it with this:

DESTINATION DETAILS
Mode: Drive
Model: SanDisk Cruzer Glide USB Device
Size: 232.4GB
FileSystem: FAT32
Partition Type: MBR

I don’t know if I’m bricked or not. Would there be a way to get it to respond to a lesser firmware? Or do I need to just take it in?

Figured it out. I found a post talking about using an SDCard reader to try. Tried it! No go. It wouldn’t even power up.

It really seemed like it was power related to me and I had recalled others making mention of powering phones and usb drives being unlit. I remembered having an external hard drive adapter and used it with a 256gb SATA drive. I know, that’s not the recommended setup. But it’s the only thing that worked.

Powered it on and then did a hard reset (power button+seek >>| buttons). Immediately went to “partitioning emmc” on screen! Praise Jesus!

Hoping this will help others. Adapter was a Sabrent USB 3.0 SATA/IDE adapter. And the adapter was plugged into the 120v jack on the car with the car RUNNING in the driveway.

Problem with this SanDisk is that it’s formatted as FAT32 instead of exFAT

Ok. And that Sandisk was brand new in packaging and used with the Cyan Labs software to reformat. All of them were formatted this way, even the SSD I used.

Is there an issue with the software? When building a disk I have not seen any mention of formatting the drive ahead of time in exFAT. Only mention of the software erasing the disk and installing files automatically. And I did read the guide ahead of install.

Not true, that’s just the partition format before Syn3 Updater does it’s stuff

If you read the doc on Sync3, even the download straight from Ford calls for formatting the USB as exFAT in the instructions.

Glad it worked for you, Thats all that matters.

I do see where it will partition, I was mistaken. Well, good to know!

I did look at the initial usb and it’s exFAT. So are the other two disks I made besides the sandisk. I did format the SSD myself using diskpart on Windows as exFAT when cleaning the disk of all old partions.

I am still thinking my issue was not the format but power. When I put in the drive with an LED on it, it powers on after saying to insert the thumb drive then shuts back down. I’ll put money on the install working if I had an externally powered USB hub!

I do applaud all of you who have made this update possible!

Wife noticed that her cell phone isn’t charging after upgrade. I am getting a new USB hub as it looks like that’s the issue unless anyone knows why that would be related. Was probably an issue before the upgrade.

As i stated, previously, Warlock is wrong, that partition type is BEFORE Syn3Updater formats it.
