2020 Ford Escape Hybrid with Navigation Issue

I recently acquired a used 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid with Navigation. Since purchasing the vehicle, I’ve been unable to connect to FordPass, even after performing a master reset. A master reset typically results in a black screen, which I’ve been able to resolve by pressing the Power and Fast Forward buttons together.

To address the connectivity issue, I attempted a USB-based software update. The first part of the update completed successfully, indicating that it would resume after restarting the vehicle. However, after the restart, the screen went black and has remained unresponsive. Even after turning the car off, the dash screen continues to display, and pressing the Power and Fast Forward buttons no longer produces any result.

The USB Light is still on even after turning off and locking the car. So I haven’t unplugged the pen drive.

What should I do next to resolve this issue?

You reformatted a 2020+ APIM to get maps installed. You just bricked your APIM.

Oops. Any way to unbrick now? My mistake I initially clicked Yes to that warning and nothing much got downloaded, I copied whatever to the USB and car didn’t read anything. So clicked on No the next time and tried.

It’s a going to require a new APIM or for it to be attached to a bench rig to get it unbricked.
And its painful to get to the APIM on the MY2020+ Escapes, pretty much the whole forward console and the FCIM has to come out, a guy on fordescape.org has a write up from his dropping a NAV APIM in to replace the factory non-NAV that he had.

FordPass problems have nothing to do with Sync, its all about the TCU.
If this is an NA market vehicle, is it still in NA? If its been imported into Europe the TCU has to be replaced. With the MY2020 Escape the silver bullet for the TCU issues (which also cause the 12v battery problems) is to get it on calibration LB5T-14G087-SP or LB5T-14G087-SR.

Yes this is NA vehicle and I tried to import NA region files. I saw a post of unbricking the Sync 3 using Sync3flash. Wouldn’t that work?

And yes the car has 12v battery problem since I got it a few weeks back, and I just changed the battery to H6 AGM right before trying this update.

  3. The AGM is a band aid, the full fix requires the TCU to have its calibration/firmware updated

The car is in Wisconsin. And it’s already past 100k miles. Does Ford dealer charge for that TCU update or is that something I can do myself?

A dealer will charge you for the TCU update since you’re long past the 3/36 warranty.
It can be done with a paid ForScan license and an OBDLink EX adapter (and before somebody corrects me, you could also use a VLinker but considering the fact that the update takes 45-60 minutes I wouldn’t).

For pulling the APIM, I saw the video on YouTube, a time taking task so will do it on a weekend.

Is there any tutorial for that TCU Update? Just wondering why Ford isn’t providing a recall as I see it’s a widespread issue.

No there’s not since its not something usually done by most people.
The TCU issue running the battery down really isn’t that widespread of an issue. Things you find on forums are people that have run into the problem, you rarely have people post that they’ve never had it happen. The 12v battery issue manifests most with people that only drive the car short distances where the 12v battery isn’t brought up to charge (this is done by the BECM as there isn’t an alternator). Run any battery with low charge long enough you’ll kill it, personally Ford could have avoided the issue by using a T5 as they did in the MY2017+ Fusion HEV/PHEV instead of a T4.

Yes I saw that option. Thanks. I was wondering if any other option available without removing it from car using Forscan and OBD2 adapter. Apparently there is nothing for MY20+ units.
