2021 Ford Ranger (AUS) SYNC 3 and map update question

I’ve recently bought a 2021 Ford Ranger XLT (AUS) and it has SYNC 3 with navigation. The SYNC 3 is at 3.4.23188 (latest) yet the maps are ANZ119 (ancient).

Is there a way to create a USB stick that updates just the maps? I am trying to use the Syn3Update to do just that but I get a blank drop down when I select “Only Update Maps”.

SYNC Region: ANZ

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: Unknown

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 3.4.23188

New SYNC Version: 3.4.23188

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
I never updated SYNC 3, the previous owner must have done it at the last service

Update Method: Official Ford

ANZ maps are ESN locked, you need to reformat the unit in order to install them.
:warning: You can’t reformat MY20 hardware with Syn3updater.
You can with FMODS’ unversal reformat package though, so you can look into that.

Typical Ford Australia garbage if that’s the case. Thanks Sandman.

Edit: went to the FMODS site… there’s not much there for the Australian delivered Rangers at all.

Left field/orthodox idea, would the maps update if the car is connected to a wifi network with internet access?

FMODS are not tied to any particular model, they will work for Sync3 regardless the vehicle. What you need to research is using their universal reformat tool that can reformat MY20 hardware, that’s the only part you need. All other packages can be the ones used by Syn3updater, BUT NOT THE REFORMAT PACKAGE.

:warning: Again, do not reformat the unit using Syn3updater. Syn3updater uses a leaked Ford’s tool that can’t handle MY20.

But FMODS’ universal reformat package can handle MY20, so that’s your only option to reformat the unit.

In order to use their reformat tool you need to jailbreak the unit, and we do not support that.

If your car is entitled to that, it should, but if that’s the case I would check Ford’s webpage first, it’s always best to create an USB rather than doing it over wifi. Maybe you could even purchase map updates, I’m not sure how that’s handled over there.

The car still has heaps of factory warranty, don’t want to go formatting it then taking it to them and to then be denied a warranty repair. Not only that, their dealers service depts have no idea most of the time lately, since the spicy cough their care (and knowledge) factor is near zero.

Ford Australia have crippled every link they had to enable the creation of an update USB, even to check entitlement. Parts departments have no listing for the maps (either as a download link or a physical media).

And Android Auto isn’t an option as where we are there’s no mobile coverage (use Starlink at home).

The local Ford dealer attempted to do a map update, it didn’t take. Repeated the process and same result. They ran a diagnostic and couldn’t find the cause of the fault.
