APIM update problems

Just did the 4.2 to 8in screen swap on a 2018 F150 XL.
APIM and Screen came from a junkyard, APIM from a 2019 F150 Screen from a 2017 Expedition.
Flashed my original ASBUILT file onto the new APIM and everything seemed fine. (This was mainly to remove auto climate controls and NAV as my truck didnt have them)
Went to update to the latest SYNC, settings were MY2020=no, NAV=no (because i had flashed the asbuilt from my old unit which didnt have nav)
Update started but after about 25min the radio seemed to reset and the update stopped.
Let it sit for another 20 min and no activity on the USB so i restarted the truck.
Everything was still working but the update didnt apply.
Reflashed the APIM again with the original ASBUILT (luckilly i made a backup before i flashed it to my ASBUILT)
Started making another update USB this time with NAV, got worried about this MY2020 thing since the date on the APIM was 12/2019
Sticker on the back of the APIM reads LL3T-14G370-MCG.
Put that into the CYANLABS checker and it says its invalid.
Made an Interrogator USB
APIM Model: LU5T-14G371-CKC
APIM Type: Navigation
APIM Size: 32GB
APIM Free Space: 4.4G
Version 3.4.22200 (NU5T-14G381-AA)

10/9/2024 12:38:35 PM +00:00
Put that Model in the checker and it DOES say MY2020…
Am now very confused, what do i need to do to update this thing to the latest SYNC without bricking it?

SYNC Region: NA

Navigation Variant: Nav

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?

Keep MY20 protection enabled and work with whatever options the tool gives you.

Also, since you have a NO-NAV running 3.4, check this guide for guidance → Tutorial: Sync 3.4 NON-NAV APIM: Failure to Update to Newer Version Sync 3.4

Small update, after using the interrogator the updater seems to be enforcing some settings.
I noticed I can no longer select a higher maps version now (Will only let me select NA220 and I already have NA221).
Here is the latest Log File Syn3 Updater Log - CyanLabs

But the apim is NAV

All this is well documented over the documentation section, I advise you to read it.

MY20 hardware can’t be reformatted through Syn3Updater, that’s why some map versions are not available to you since they are ESN locked and can’t be installed without a reformat.

If you want them, you will have to jailbreak the unit and reformat it with other means like FMODS’ universal reformat tool (we do not support jailbreaking).

No doubt this is a 2020 L series APIM.

OK thanks for the info, I just want to mention about the documentation that I didn’t even know I had a MY2020 unit so I didn’t know I needed to read the documentation on it.
I actually specifically asked for a screen and APIM out of a 2018 F150 to match what would have come in my truck from the factory, but they ended up getting me the APIM out of a 2019 F150, the bezel out of a 2017 expedition (which I immediately refused) and the screen out of a 2017 expedition.

So not sure if I should make a new topic but I ran the updater just now, everything seemed to go ok.
Checked and the SYNC version successfully updated, I’ve read in the documents its a good idea to do a master reset after the upgrade so I did.
Now all I get is a black screen, not even the Ford Logo.
I can see the backlight come on for 10-20 seconds then it goes off and I have nothing.

They did not put an L series APIM in a 2019 F150. As you can see the build date was December of 2019 and those were built for the 2020’s. The seller assumed because it said 2019 for the build date that it was from a 2019 F-150 and that was a false assumption. You could ask for the VIN of the vehicle it came out of and I bet you it was a 2020.

So I went out to try and pull diagnostic info with the Interrogator USB, It had been like 45min and when I turned the ignition on the Ford logo came on the display.
Waited a few seconds and the radio started playing, screen came on.

Interface was super laggy, took 5-10 seconds for a touch press to register.
Pulled the Interrogator file which rebooted the radio of course, was much less laggy after.

Did a soft reboot and everything seems fine now? Did I just not leave enough time for the hard reset to complete?

I can only guess this is because the screen is from a 2017 Expedition.

Will this mess with me upgrading the screen to a 2024 8.46in screen later on?
