Backup Camera Not Working After Switching from Sync 2 to Sync 3

Swapped my Sync 2 out on my 2014 Fiesta Titanium for Sync 3 and the factory backup camera does not work anymore. A blue screen comes up for a couple seconds, and then a black screen with an error message: “Camera is unavailable. Please contact your dealership.”

I have looked at the APIM and IPC settings in the central configuration and the backup camera is still enabled and set to Analog. I have not made any changes to the As-built yet.

The adapter harness for the new APIM has a yellow camera plug, but I’m not sure if that’s in place of the factory connection or an aux camera for vehicles without factory cameras.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?

I read that post earlier. Would the same values work for the Fusion and the Fiesta?

That depends on your asbuilt, but yes. If you have 7D0-08-xx then the settings should work.

Tried the changes in the 7D0-08-XX line and it didn’t seem to work. I wasn’t sure if I should copy all the stuff over from the Sync 2 AB first though like the OP from the other post did.

Maybe 7D0-01-01 you can copy, as those line up as far as definitions.

If the wires on the yellow plug are the only ones going to the contacts on that connector then you are likely missing the camera input from the factory harness.

For background I bought this 54 Pin Apim Connector Sync 1 for Ford Camera Input Harness Cable Extension on SYNC 2 or SYNC 3 with RCA Connector for Camera 35cm 14 inches to make an adapter for my MFT to SYNC3 upgrade. All the wires were pass through except for the camera feed wires. I had to remove the yellow plug from the connector and remove two other wires from the connector that my APIM did not need and use those wires to pass through the camera feed.

That’s the same adapter I have. Which pins did you have to remove to make the camera work?

This post has the pinouts of two different APIMs. I just found two wires that were not used on my APIM and removed them and then used them.

The 2018 APIM connector is a subset of the 2020 APIM connector in that post. Would suggest using the 2020 APIM pinout as a go by for which wires to use to make the pass through for the camera.

Coming from Sync 2, he could use the AUX IN wires that were for the old Sync 2 hub. I harvested these for the X40 addition for my 2015 F-150.

Interesting I wrote that. Fun fact since than, I did get HS4 to work and put a TCU, GWM & APIM successfully.

Essentially that extension cable is a direct pass through for all contacts except for the video which has that yellow RCA plug. So there are plenty of non-used wires in that cable.

Yes you did and I have used that invaluable information for other upgrades.

So basically I need to remove the yellow camera cable and find the camera leads from the car side (Sync 2) connector and move 2 unused wires from the adapter harness over to the camera leads?

Yes. Remove the connectors attached to the yellow plug from the connector.

Find two wires on the pinout diagram that have no connection to the APIM. Remove them from the connectors on each end.

Use those wires to replace the ones you removed when you took the yellow plug out. I would do it one at a time and make sure they line up with the male connector at the other end. (You can check this by plugging in the male and female connecter of the cable into itself and checking alignment or by using a multimeter/continuity checker)

Thanks for all the help. Last question, is there a trick to getting the pins out of the connector? I’ve gotten the connector opened up, but it’s hard to tell if I need to use something to release the individual pins to get them out of the connector.

Nevermind, I was able to get them with a safety pin. Camera works! Thanks guys!
