Black Screen after update from Sync 3 v3.0 to v3.3 - Ford Mustang 2018

Hello to everyone, I’m new here, as I recently purchased Ford Mustang 2018 with Sync 3 on board. It was just repaired and I started to do some upgrades…

I decided to upgrade my Sync 3 v3.0 to Sync 3.3, because I wanted to change the language to Polish and I needed the European language packages. Yesterday, I tried to update my Sync 3 via official Ford webpage, and I managed to update it from Sync 3 v3.0 build 19205 to build 20204.

Today I downloaded Cyanlabs Sync3 Updater and generated the update (the log of the update is down below). The thing I shouldn’t probably do is changing the region from US to Europe in the updater program… But well I did it, because I don’t have navigation im my Sync 3 unit, so the size of the European maps shouldn’t be a problem. The size of the Cyanlabs update was also not that bigger (2,94 GB) compared to the official update (2,32 GB).

When I started the Cyanlabs update it went as it should, it started updating, reported the update is complete in few seconds and started to reboot, but the reformat status window never showed, it just stayed black - no radio, no backup camera, no backlight - just not working.

I let is stay that way for about 15 minutes (car was running, usb in the port) and then turned off the car. The screen was still black. I locked the car and went home for an hour to research the issue. Then I tried to do a hard reset by clicking the power button and right seek button. It didn’t work for the display, but the usb port lights up when I do it. Next, I disconnected the car battery for 15 minutes, but it didn’t help either.

Then I tried check if the APIM is working at all in Forscan. I was seeing the module and was able to change the as build data in the program. I decided to change as build APIM settings, to the factory ones in Forscan, because I saw that the numbers were different in the module. The line 7D0-01-01 6A2A 6102 3000 was changed to the factory: 7D0-01-01 6A2A 0102 30A0. Next, I checked the errors in Forscan (probably should do it first). The errors are:

U0121:00-08 Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module Read
U0151:00-08 Lost Communication with Restraints Control (RCM) Module Read
U0155:00-08 Lost Communication with Instrument Panel Control (IPC) Module

Lastly, I tried to reset the module in the Forcsan (the wrench icon). It restarted, bu the screen remained black.

Next thing I want to try is booting the system one more time from the usb. I don’t know if it will work but the usb port is lighting up every time after the hard reset method (the only one with any visible results so far). I don’t know if I should try the original update (probably won’t work if the system is in the booting mode) or the Cyanlabs update (I don’t know what numbers I should write in the configurator, the old ones or the new ones, and what about the region). I would appreciate any help at this moment, because I am stuck and I don’t know what to do next…

P.S. As far as I know, the Sync 3 system on the vehicle is there from the factory. I remember I checked the VIN nubmer in Frod Elisa and Sync 3 was listed in the accesories, but I don’t have access anymore to check it again. The VIN number is 1FA6P8TH9J5114739. I bought the car in march 2021 from copart, and it was in-operational from December 2020. I don’t know if the screen or the APIM module was changed by the previous owner. My20 Protection was Enabled in the program.

If it is the case, that the screen or the module was changed by the previous owner and it is in fact 2020 module, I understand that the only “easy” fix is to replace the APIM module? (As I don’t own an older screen from Sync 3.0)

My20 protection was set to Auto Detect, please provide the interrogator xml file in this thread (the one that it would have prompted for)

Do you have access to the unit?. Only way to really be sure about if any of the unit’s components are MY20/+ is by looking at the models. You can also take a look at this → 2018 Flex SEL Upgrade from 2.3.17109 to most current BLACK SCREEN - #19 by F150chief

There’s a lot of troubleshooting there that could help serve you as a guide.

You would have been asked this question, as you said “No” syn3 updater assumes you are not MY20 or above. unfortunately you have probably bricked your unit.

I’ll try to access the APIM unit and report back the part number. If it is 2020 version I understand I have to replace is to another 2020 version, and it should fix the problem? Is there anything more I have to do after replacing the part than programing the APIM as build in Forscan, to match my VIN number (Load factory AB)?


You have given great info above about the issue and we would like to help, but we need the APIM Interrogator Utility log to do so. We need to know what hardware is in the vehicle to diagnose the issue.

The car sync doesn’t boot, he can’t get that now if he hasn’t already got one.

You can get the info from FORScan…firmware screen or module screen under profile.

Do you have physical access to the unit?, can you gain access and check the screen’s model?.

J is MY18 I believe, or at least it originally was. Maybe J-series is a “transition” serie between MY20 and NOT-MY20?, not sure…

If in fact your screen is MY20, if you can get hand to a not MY20 screen you could complete the update.

I will disassemble the dashboard probably tomorrow and send images of the FCIM and screen unit labels.

One more thing. Is there a problem if the FCIM unit will be from the EU distribution and the screen will remain USA?

I think he is right; the unit was replaced with a NEW service unit which probably has the new eMMC version. These “NEW” units are not remanufactured but are Ford Service replacement units. This is not the first one of these I’ve seen. The vehicle has several service issues that were addressed by Ford, but I cannot see the details without paying for a report.

Yep. That is my thought. I am wondering if they can be identified by the interrogator. We already known this part number is one of them.

MY18 has 14G370 has 2nd qualifier, this presumed MY20 has 14G371.
