Hello, I have a 2019 Ford F150. Last week the Sync performed an update. After the update was complete, the screen went black and that’s it. When I start the truck the Ford Logo displays (for a long time) and then the screen is black. If I plug the USB cable into my iPhone, I can play my music and it will play over the speakers and if I make a call the phone will play over the speakers as well. But I cannot see anything. I have done the hard reset, pulled the battery cables, and also tried to plug a USB drive with the current update on it. None of these things do anything for me. I took it to the dealer and they said that there is a problem with the latest update and that Ford is working on it. I asked if they could push an older download to the system to get me going and they said they could not. I do have the FORSCAN software and the cable but I do not know what to do. Looking for any help.
This version has several issues, but I have not seen this behavior with any Sync update unless the theme was changed to one discontinued or not supported in Sync 3.4, or the display and or display drivers are not working properly.
If your truck is still under warranty, Ford should fix it. They can indeed place any revision of Sync 3.2 or above on the unit to troubleshoot. They can also reload the factory asbuilt below to see if that fixes the issue, sometimes due to corruption in the asbuilt data. Also, there is no issue with the updates that would cause this issue. I suggest you find a new service department.
You can try a system reset according to Ford:
The system has a System Reset feature that can be performed if the function of a SYNC
3 feature is lost. This reset is intended to restore functionality and will not erase any
information previously stored in the system (such as paired devices, phonebook, call
history, text messages, or user settings). To perform a System Reset, press and hold
the Seek Up (>>) button while pressing and holding the Radio Power button. After
approximately 5 seconds the screen will go black. Allow 1-2 minutes for the system
reset to complete. You may then resume using the SYNC system.
If it is not under warranty, you could back rev the Sync APIM to 3.3.19052 and see if the display comes back. This can be done thru the Syn3 Updater.
Thank you! I downloaded 3.3.19052 to my USB drive and put it in. The screen is black so I didn’t know if it was doing anything, (the light on the USB Drive was blinking for about 10 minutes and then went solid). I left the truck running and about 30 minutes and then the Screen came to life. I immediately turned off Automatic Updates…
I have the same issue in my 2018 F150. Last week I upgraded from 2.3.17109 to 3.0.20204 after looking up my VIN on Ford’s website and installing the update via USB. After the update went through I get the same black screen issues but the radio still works and sometimes the navigation will display but there are not buttons to select on the screen.
I started looking into how to fix this issue and I think that my truck did have it’s theme changed. I bought the truck used from a dealer and I noticed that when I would start the truck it would display a Mustang GT logo on the screen instead of F150. Some of the screens looked different than the other used trucks I was looking at so I’m thinking the theme was changed? If that is the case, what needs to be done to install an upgrade?
The dealer could do it but it will cost you more than the entire FORScan setup, which if you have a Windows laptop available to use, about $50 for the adapter. The software is free.
I went to FORScan to register my account but it is saying creating new accounts is not currently possible. Does this happen sometimes or is this part of the Russian sanctions?
Well that sucks. I just got my adaptor too. Anyone in the Cleveland area have a license that can help me out? I’m willing to pay to get this fixed ( hopefully not the dealership tho)
Thank you all so much for your help. I was able to download the license and activate the FORScan software. I looked up my VIN on motorcraft and have my original as build. Do I need to run the software and switch everything back to the original now?
Yes, that is correct. I wasn’t sure if I had to restore everything or if there was a specific module that would give me the screen back after changing it. I think I need to do more digging in the tutorials to find it if you all are tired of holding my hand

It looks like it’s the obsolete GT theme which makes sense as that is what I used to see when I started the truck on 2.3. Do I just need to change this value to Ford Classic or Ford Timeless?
Also, when I was backing up each of the as builds the TCCM would not finish running. Each time I got an error Service procedure has been interrupted
I have a Ford F150. I just made the change and now it’s showing up again. This is so awesome thank you for all of the help! Now I’m going to have to start playing with some of the other mods!
