Just bought a used 2016 F-150 with Sync3 version 2.0. The ford website says the software is “up to date” which is obviously incorrect. Before I do any damage to the system I would like to know if I can use the syn3 updated to go from version 2.0 to 3.4?

Terminology is fine. You will see on this website referred to as Sync 2.0.xxxxx, or Sync 3 version 2.0.xxxxx. The Ford website should reflect the available update as Sync 3.0.20204, which is the latest version for the older Sync 3.0 series.
But, yes, you can upgrade directly to Sync 3.4.21265. Make sure that you follow the instructions and fill out the information in the Syn3 Updater app for present version, region, and NAV or NON-NAV. (You cannot place maps on a NON-NAV APIM)
