Cant get car to update from 1.0.15139 to 2.2

Hey guys im trying to get my 2016 Focus ST updated from 1.0.15139 to 2.2 I tried doing it from the offical ford website and it just sat on installingfor over an hour. So I downloaded the tool from this website and noticed under the tools section that there is an option to create a 2.2 update drive for cars having issues going directly to 3.3. Ive also read on here that in order to get carplay to work you need to update to 2.2 first then go to 3.3. I used that tool and had the usb in my car for over an hour with the same issue. Now I ran the interrigator and im getting this error: https://imgur.com/9PMu5I4 Once I click past it I just see this: https://imgur.com/LMVhFmx . Can anyone please help me ive been pulling my hair out trying to do this for the last week and have no idea what im doing wrong. Am I just not waiting long enough? Its a big update I have navigation so the direct update files from ford were around 14 gigs. Another question is do I really need to have the ENGINE on and running??! Why is that a thing? Can I not just hook my car up to a battery charger and leave the ignition on?

Let’s start with the 2.2 piece.

  1. Is anything plugged into the other USB port even just a charging cable?
  2. Have you tried the other port on the off chance the port is worn.
  3. What error do you get when trying to run the 2.2 install?
  4. Have you replaced the USB media hub with a true Ford part (you have to replace it for Car Play functionality even if you stay in the 3.0.x family)?

Thanks for the reply,
Nothing is plugged into the other ports in the car. I have also tried both ports in the car with no success.
I also haven’t replaced the usb yet due to the fact that I can’t get it to update. I was planning on upgrading the usb once I could get a successful update.

It’s my brothers car and I don’t have direct access to it as he’s at work. I’m going to just retry the same 2.2 update tool and see if I can reproduce the error code and get it noted down.

By any chance do you know if the engine needs to be running? I was hoping to just hook up the car to a charger and leave the ignition on.

The car does not need to be running but you need more than a trickle charger hooked to the battery. Also make sure if the car has an “auto off” feature that it is disabled.

Not true. You can reformat the APIM from any version prior to Sync 3.4. Carplay will work fine with the update USB hub, which you will need.
