Clicks , Pops and Stutters after updating to Sync 3.4

Hi Guys, nice to meet you.

I Hope I do not post somewhere that I shouldn’t. I Did search quite a lot on the internet about the issue that I’m having , but I can’t seem to find anything that resembles my issue, nor any fixes, That’s why I decided to ask for help here.

First off , I recently purchased a Ford Fiesta ST-Line 2018 Model.
I Live in Greece , but the car was made and sold in Germany, and then imported here in Greece, where I bought it, a month or so before.

A couple days ago , I’ve updated my car’s Sync system , from 3.0.20204 (which was the version that I bought it with) to 3.4.22251 (Latest from Syn3 Updater)

Everything went smoothly , the installation took about 40-50 minutes , I did a master reset right after the installation , and then proceeded to connect my iPhone
via Bluetooth and all. everything works great. the system is faster , looks better and feels more modern. however I do have an issue.

Every time I listen to music via Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay (both ways with Spotify app) or when I’m making a call (both on CarPlay and sync3 system) there’s two issues.

  1. When listening to music , there seems to be a stutter in the songs , at random times (approx. once or twice per song) its definitely audible , but not extremely loud. it happens every time just for a fraction of a second.

  2. When making a phone call , every couple of seconds (approx. 30-40) there’s a kind of loud “click” or “pop” sound like when the power is cut from a speaker, but everything continues to work like normal.

The thing is that apart from that being annoying I’m worried that it could potentially damage the head unit , or the speakers.

is there any way to fix this issue ? anyone had something similar happen to him / her?

Thanks in Advance Guys, appreciate every reply.

You should perform a master reset of the APIM to delete the phone and then add it back in. Make sure you delete the Sync BT device on the phone and reboot the phone to clear the cache before you add it back to the Sync APIM.

This issue is usually caused by the wrong BT audio profile being selected during pairing.

Hi! thanks for your reply. well I did try what you said, and I took a ride for about 25-30 minutes, everything worked fine when connected via Bluetooth directly to Ford Sync system, however when I switched to Apple CarPlay via cable (I do not have wireless CarPlay) I Played like 3-4 songs and it happened once.

I suppose the Bluetooth connection directly to Sync 3.4 is a whole different story than wired Apple CarPlay?

So I’ve made a couple of rides again , and it happens again . Both wirelessly (sync Bluetooth ) and wired (Apple CarPlay) not so frequently , but still happens…

It sounds like the songs skip a beat or two . It’s weird . Is there anything else I can do?

I’m having the same problem with clicks and pops. Upgraded from 3.0 to 3.4.22250. Tried the instructions from F150Chief with master reset without any improvement.

You should both investigate the issue with the phone BT, especially if you are using a Pixel phone. This is a BT compatibility issue, not necessarily a Sync problem. Check what BT audio profiles the phones are using to connect to Sync.

I’m not sure how to investigate this.
I’m using an iPhone SE 2020, running iOS 16.1.1 (Latest). the phone’s bluetooth version is 5.0 and it supports all these

v5.0, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), Hands-Free Profile (HFP), Human Interface Device Profile (HID), Personal Area Network Profile (PAN), Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP)

I’ve searched a bit on my car and I found these infos:

Are they helpful?

@F150Chief

Yes. Sync supports the necessary profiles. It is a question of the phone supporting and implementing those properly when connected to Sync. There could be an issue with an update os setting in the phone affecting the BT connection. If you use Waze, this is a documented issue that affects WIFI and BT.

If you are using an iPhone, (SE), it may be necessary to reset the phone if the pairing delete and re-pairing does not work. You will loose everything on the phone if you do this, so make sure you have a complete backup of the phone.

Yes it is…

So before I actually reset my iPhone, I wanted to try something .
I Closed Bluetooth from my phone, and connected to the car via USB cable (Original Apple Cable).

i’ve had a call , and no pops or whatever (it was a small call, about 2-3 minutes).
then i’ve opened Spotify , and listened for almost an hour straight ( my drive to work.)
it happened again, but not as many times. probably once every two-three songs.

this could mean two things i believe.

It’s either a problem with the head unit (software issue , since this didnt happen with the previous versions)
or a problem with my Phone in general ? but wouldn’t it be an issue with every bluetooth device that i connect to it?

anyone?

I’ve had BT audio issues similar to what is described here since updating from 2.2 to 3.0 (via Ford). When I first updated to 3.4 from Cyanlabs the issue was still there, until I accidentally found out that turning off WiFi on Sync completely solved the issue.

I’m not completely sure if both issues correlates, but I think it’s worth the try.

Hmm…Ya know, that should be common sense and obvious (At least for those of us more tech inclined: On most consumer electronics, BT and Wifi often share the same chipset and transceiver/antennas and can sometimes interfere) but never thought of it before. Will have to try that on mine. Given the Wifi feature on these is practically useless, shouldn’t be a huge concern.

i’ve tried it, but when in carplay (which is wired) i still get stutters , like the songs are skipping a beat or something.

That’s a very good experience to share, thank you.
Even if it’s not related at all, it’s worth trying.

Not only that, but the overhead the unit has to process to keep up with network discovery. Makes some sense, specially on these units that were never supposed to have 3.4.

As you said, would not hurt to try.

Have you reset your phone and made both ends (Sync ↔ Phone) forget about the other end?.

Yes I’ve tried that before turning the WiFi of the unit off. Maybe I’ll do it once more now that I’ve closed the WiFi and let you know the results

well i’ve tried master reset the head unit , and disconnecting everytrhing from my phone etc. then shutdown the phone for a couple of minutes , and connected everything via cable only (for the Carplay to start) .

it happens again. bluetooth seems to be working fine (wireless sync3 audio from spotify of my phone) but anything wired (including carplay) seems to be having this issue. of course , ive tried serveral different cables, including original iphone ones.

i dont know what else to do.

Please, do not double post. If you need to add information, just edit your messages instead of posting a new one after a post by you.

About your issue, do you have an Android device to test android auto?. I’m wondering if this is something related to iOS alone.

I have an Android device and never faced these issues.

sorry mate, i had no clue it’s not allowed.

well, i do have an old android phone but haven’t tried it yet. maybe i will try it today and let you know how it goes.

could this be an issue with iOS 16? or is my iPhone the problem?

From what I remember, latest iOS versions introduced some issues with Sync3… But since I’m not an iOS user, I do not have the details.

But from reading the forums, it’s not rare to see CP users with issues like yourself.

That’s why I suggested trying an Android device.
I know, different brand, OS and “protocols”, but if android auto works ok, then I would point towards iOS or CP as the issue.
