After the second Boot the fw isn’t updated but the maps are completely gone. What could he do wrong?

Perform a master reset, then tell your friend to run an interrogator log.
What you are saying does not make a lot of sense. Why?, simple: if it actually installed 3.3 there’s no reason for the reformat to “fail”, nor the maps to disappear.
So, lets see were the unit stands, and then we will see.
the update with a clone stick (same setting) on my 2019 smax yesterday evenning was fine!
the reformat step take about 38 minutes, until the green successful screen was showing.
could it it be that the sync abort the reformat if you don’t remove the usb stick at the green screen?
my freind has to goes away for around 2 hours and couldn’t remove the stick after around 40 minutes.
If your friend did not remove the USB after completion, the process would start again (downgrade to 3.3 and reformat).
Sync3 can’t abort the reformat phase since while in the reformat phase there’s no sync3 os active.
Original request still stands: perform a master reset, run an interrogator log and post back the results.
