I did a mistake... MEM_ERR01 message

Thank you for allowing me to become a member of your community. I’ve reached your forum because I’m having a issue, self created one, unfortunately.
At the end of the message I’ll post the log from the interrogator.

Here is the story. Initially my Mustang GT (MY2022) had Sync 3.4 Build 21944, European Maps F10. Then, I connected to the Ford website and checked if for my VIN there are updates. There were updates for both, SYNC and Nav Maps. I used the USB method and all went ok. The result was SYNC 3.4 Build 23188 - which worked fine, no issues here. But the Nav Maps new version was NA 2 22. I did a mistake… I logged in on the .com website rather than European website, or Belgium website. I uploaded by mistake the North America maps. I must say that there was no warning message for uploading North American maps instead of European maps.

Then, I tried to upload the European F12 Nav maps and I got the error message MEM_ERR01. The results is that, in the “About Sync” menu from the car screen I see “Navigation Maps Version: F12” but there are no details on the Navigation screen, only country boundaries. I assume the reason is that the maps were not completely uploaded due to the lack of hardware memory space.
Needless to say that the Ford customer service and my dealer technicians were useless, they just tried to upload the F12 maps and they got the same error, obviously.

So, here I am with you guys (thanks a lot for your effort!) to verify the procedure I’ve understood reading most of your website. Please assist me. Here is my understanding of the procedure I need to apply.

  1. Syn 3 Updater (last Ver), Utilities, Select A USB drive, Create Downgrade USB menu, click on Prepare USB.
    Car Configuration, new profile, Full Version=3.4.23188, Region=Europe, Navigation=Yes, Advance Options=Off (Install Mode = Auto-Detect)
Home tag, New Version, Region=Europe, Version=Sync 3.3.19052, Map Version=Non Map APIM (this is the only choice).

  2. Run this USB in the car. The result should be that SYNC 3.3.19052 will be installed. The memory space is free again (The reformat tool is used implicitly to clean up memory, right?).

  3. Turn the car off then on again.

  4. Create a new USB content to upgrade to SYNC 3.4 Build 23188 again.
    Car Configuration, new profile, Full Version=3.3.19052, Region=Europe, Navigation=Yes, Advance Options=Off (Install Mode = Auto-Detect).
Home tag, Select A USB Drive, New Version, Region=Europe, Version=Sync 3.4.23188, Map Version=Non Map APIM (this is the only choice). Then there are 4 packages to be downloaded on the USB stick. Install Mode = Autoinstall, Forced=No, MY20 Protection=Auto-Detect.
Press start to build the USB.

  5. Run this USB in the car. The result is that the SYNC Build 3.4.23188 is installed and the memory is free, empty.

  6. Create a new USB content to upload the F12 maps.
    Car Configuration, new profile, Full Version=3.4.23188, Region=Europe, Navigation=Yes, Advance Options=Off (Install Mode = Auto-Detect).
Home tag, New Version, Select a USB Drive, Region=Europe, Version=Only Update Maps, Map Version=F12 (2022) – EU (05-2022) (updated voice). Then there are multiple packages to be downloaded on the USB stick (20GB+). Install Mode = Autoinstall, Forced=No, MY20 Protection=Auto-Detect.
Press start to build the USB.

  7. Run the USB in the car. The result should be that SYNC 3.4.23188 and F12 maps.

Is this chain of actions correct?

“[Reformat tool] Doesn’t work on certain 2020 screen/APIM combinations, more specific information is still being investigated by CyanLabs and other communities.”

Could you assess if my car has a bad combination screen/APIM based on the interrogator info below?

Thanks a lot, much appreciated.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
MEM_ERR01

Update Method: Official Ford

You may need to use FMods to jailbreak the unit and then use the map remover so that you can reinstall the correct maps.

At this point, the unit has 18Gb of free space, which is adequate for basic operations.
There’s only a solution for your issue: FMODS’ jailbreak.

I mean, you could run your unit with 18GB of free space, you could even try installing the proper map packages, but you would need to split those into multiple smaller pieces since the unit does not have a lot of free space like “a normal” APIM would.

So, this is what you need to do (and I’m sure you will need to do some research).
A) Jailbreak the unit
B) Once it’s jailbroken, either:
1- Run the map removal mod from FMODS
2- Reformat the unit with FMODS’ universal reformat package, which can be used on MY20 hardware. :warning: DO NOT USE SYN3UPDATER TO REFORMAT THE UNIT :warning:

If you as me, the A.B.2 should be your goal: it will be faster and cleaner.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Cyanlabs does not support Jailbreak, that’s FMODS’ stuff.
So you may want to head their way to start your research.

Finally: something does not really add up, since a VIN should be unique, and they should know where each VIN is… So even if you used a different web site, Ford should not had given you NA maps…
But again, it’s Ford right?, so we cannot expect much from them…

Thank you both for the answer, I’ll have a look on the FMods.
I hoped it would be easier… Not the case.

Just to better understand, why I cannot use Syn3Updater? To downgrade then delete the maps and install new ones?

Is it an issue on the screen/APIM combination which is not right?

Last question: Do you think that in 2-3 years time, when a new EU maps are available, F13, it will be possible to install them directly?
Because now, the new NA maps installed directly on top of F10 maps and deleted them.

Thank you for all the info and the effort on this tool.

Syn3Updater uses the leaked reformat tool from Ford, which does not support MY20 hardware.

Maybe, maybe not… you are asking a very open question with a lot of variables… I would say maybe, but who knows what the future may bring…

You can’t delete maps, EU maps are still there after the NA maps install…
You have a mixture of maps, you need to solve that somehow …

You can jailbreak the unit, then use FMods map remover to pull the maps out and then use FMods map update tool.
It’s cumbersome but it does work.

Thank you. :+1:
