Installing UK/EU maps on US Ford

Hello! I live in the UK and decided there aren’t enough muscle cars here, so I shipped one (2022 Mustang) over from the US. I’d really like to get the UK maps into the navigation system. I feel like the information I see here is a bit conflicting - it sounds like it is possible, but perhaps not “supported”. I’m wondering - has anyone been successful with this? I’ve tried downloading a few packages but nothing ever seems to install correctly. I’m wondering if I need to first downgrade my sync unit so that it can perform a necessary reformat operation? Any advice is appreciated :slight_smile:

Hey there.

First of all, DO NOT RUN THAT USB AGAINST THE UNIT.

Also, there’s no conflicting information: “Cyanlabs does not support changing regions” does not equal to “it cannot be done”… There’s a big difference there…
It can be done, but you are on your own, basically.

Having said that, you would need to read this thread on this topic → Tutorial: Current EU Maps Installation on US Imported Vehicles

But, there’s a big stopper: your unit is MY20 which can’t be reformatted.
In order to change regions you need to reformat the unit, something that yours can’t take.

There’s however something else you may want to research: jailbreak.
With that, you could bypass the reformat requirement and delete your current NA maps without reformatting (something that can’t be done in a “normal” way) and then install a cut down version for EU maps … Or, you could also try the universal reformat tool that FMODs released a few days ago which enables reformat on MY20 units… Also, take into consideration some maps are ESN locked so the MUST be installed via reformat… I can’t recall if the latest EU ones are locked or not, I would think not, but you can double check that in Syn3updater (if the autoinstall option is given, then they are not locked).

Again, NONE OF THIS IS SUPPORTED BY CYANLABS, which does not mean it’s not possible…

As i understand things the US APIMs have less memory than the UK version so a FULL UK map installation isn’t possible, however there’s a feature where you can install cut-down maps. Before you do this you would have to change the device region which is frowned on here lol but there’s information on how its achieved. You also need to be wary of MY20 issues so bare this in mind. Do LOTS of reading before you commit to anything.

Thank you for the info! Why do you say not to run the USB on the unit? Did something specific catch your eye, or is that just a general warning for trying to install EU maps on US system?

I think I saw that if I first downgrade to one of the lower versions of Sync then it could allow the reformat?

I don’t like the sound of doing a jailbreak lol. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty a bit here, but I would like to avoid totally breaking the system :slight_smile:

Thanks for that! Yea it baffles me that the US ones have less memory, yet can fit the entire NA sat nav on them, but not Europe? Are there really that many more roads here? Crazy!
Yea I changed the APIM region in a couple of places, just trying to get past the My20 issues now I think. I think I need to downgrade before I can upgrade…

If you do that, EU MAPS will be autoinstalled onto your unit without removing the NA ones, thus filling up the APIM’s storage with no real mean for you to erase those files without heavily messing with the unit. Remember what I’ve just said in my previous post: maps can’t be deleted via “normal” methods… So you would end up with a “no free” storage APIM with mixed maps…

Again, this should be crystal clear to you by now: a MY20 APIM can’t be reformatted. It’s a simple as that…

Sure, you can downgrade and then reformat it, but you will kill the unit for good because it cannot be reformatted with the tools we have at hand… It does not matter which Sync3 version the unit is running, it cannot be reformatted, period.

I’ve given alternatives in my opening message, it’s up to you if you go after those or not. But again, Cyanlabs does not support changing regions :wink:

Another thing you could look into is getting a proper EU NAV APIM, but we are talking about spending some $$$. If you get a new unit, it would also be good for you to get a not MY20 combo (APIM+SCEREN) so you would not have to worry about reformatting it.

You would need to make a copy of your current asbuilt for later configuring the APIM like the one you currently have.

NA maps is a lot smaller than all of Europe,
