Try a master reset, General > Settings > Master Reset then try the USB again.

This appears to be a hardware fault, i have found 2 or 3 people online with this issue all went to ford and got the APIM replaced under warranty.
Out of curiosity are you also not able to persist changes, phones that are added, radio presets etc?
Master Reset didn’t effect.
What is also strange after MR previosly deleted Bluetooth devices and carplay devices is back on the list.
Carplay also doesn’t work with my phone. Just nofitication that car see my phone but that’s all.
I see APIM must be replaced.
So sad there is no longer warranty for my car… However this is a good reacon to change smaller memory NA APIM to EU one.
Yes this further confirms my suspicions, Where are you located in the world?
Poland, however car was imported from Nashville, TN.
Hey i have same problem with my 2018 mustang no warranty whats the solution how ill know I got the right part (APIM) for my car been told they are all the same since 2017 mustang till 2020 any one out of any of this cars will be the same is that right??
any apim will work, try and get a newer one if you can
Any ford part number?
Or do you know where is the best place to get it?
Will it work out of any Ford 2016+ equipped with sync 3 or will I need it out of mustangs only?
I found one locally here out of ford explorer 2018 for much lower price will that work? Hope to hear from you soon thanks
Yes all APIMs are the same just be aware of region and nav or not.
I got the same error.
But everything works fine, no issues with presets, phones, car play and etc.
Hi all! Okay so I have a 2019 F250 6.7 Def deleted and tuned , the sync system has a update. My screen started going black on me at intermittent times like killing the truck. When I start it won’t come back on until later in the day when I put it into reverse or sometimes just when I restart it. I tried to do the update myself by downloading the update formating the USB and the whole 9 yards I get an install___err12 code. I take it to ford today he trys to do the same thing through his ford computer. He gets the install err12 code as well. He tells me my tune is blocking it from doing the update. Does the tune have anything to do with the sync system? I’ve been pulled both ways with it saying yes it does and no it does not. Any help would be appreciated. Also Bluetooth devices were never able to be deleted completely they always came back on. Apim? Lol
I would say no, err12 is hardware corruption
Your description of the issue is not clear…
When you say…“My screen started going black on me at intermittent times like killing the truck. When I start it won’t come back on until later in the day when I put it into reverse or sometimes just when I restart it.”
Is this before the Sync 3 Update?
But after you installed the tune? If so, how much later?
No it should not, but…it could interfere with the CAN signaling to turn on/off the Sync system, and other systems in fact. The effect, Sync shuts off, black screen.
Have you seen other oddities with the vehicle?
If so, you need to restore the vehicle to production and fix the issues. This issue is not unheard of but is not really common place. I think that your service tech is not wrong in saying the tune COULD be causing an issue. Maybe he could poll the APIM or GWM for the ignition status PID’s to see if they are being interfered with?
You need to delete the device from Sync, disable the connection to the phone, (forget device), then perform a master reset in Sync to erase the devices completely.
Of course, it could just be a bad APIM…

The last issue you mention not being able to delete Bluetooth devices is a classic sign of a failed APIM. Replacement of it will likely fix all the issues you mention.
