IOException Device not ready

Hey guys, I’m trying to prepare my USB device, but I only get a “Sync3 Updater has crashed” message with “Device not ready” below.
This happens when I click the Start button on the main screen of the Updater, after the app formats the USB device.
I tried first with a 4GB device and got the error. I figured it could be too little capacity. Changed it to a 1TB device, but I still get the same error.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
System.IO.IOException

What is this 1TB device?

Terabyte…1 = 1,000 GB.

Bit of USB overkill there.

presumably its a external hard drive with power management etc, this is why i asked what is the device

The 1TB is an external HD, SerialATA, USB 3.0. But the error is the same as when I tried the 4GB pen drive.

But I have successfully followed the instructions on how to manually prepare the USB device and will be trying to update my car later today.

Ok, just updated my SYNC with the 1TB External HD, all went fine. I was having trouble making the Navigation work, but after a factory reset, it started to work no problem. Android Auto works fine too.

Other than the modernized user interface, what changes does 3.4 bring compared to 2.0? Is there a place where I can see the changelog?

Consider yourself lucky you didnt brick your system by not following directions.

Which direction did I not follow?

I’m not sure, however we don’t recommend using hard drives especially for the in car part since they may not get enough power.

Use a USB stick. The hard drive will only give you problems.

I’ll reiterate that the error the installer was giving me when trying to prepare the external hd is the same as when I tried the usb stick. For this reason I doubt it is hardware related.

IOException “Device is not ready” means that the device Syn3 Updater tried to access “was not ready”, this is likely power management on your USB devices/ports or some software messing with the USB connectivity/storage devices. There is a check i can add to check if device is ready but this will only be valid at the time of the check and therefore doesn’t really resolve the issue.

To answer your question, No, Ford does not provide any changelogs.
