Latest Sync3 Update Using 8" Display Resolution Instead of 4"

I’ve been trying to get our 2020 Ford Fusion to work with the latest Sync3 update. This is a BASE MODEL with a 4" display.
Tried using the Ford website directly. But kept getting corrupted files. So I decided to start using Syn3Updater.
Unfortunately, the firmware upgrade to 3.4.23188 causes problems.
First, the firmware is trying to utilize a larger display. Guessing something like the 8 inch model. This car utilizes the 4 inch display.
Second, the APIM no longer works with the steering wheel arrow and OK buttons. At least half the buttons on the console don’t work either.
I’m a retired software developer. I managed to figure out how to downgrade the Fusion to older releases. And can upgrade to other releases if needed.
However, I’d like to know if there are known solutions for these issues.
I also contacted Ford’s Sync3 support. Ford says they have warranty support for my original version: 3.4.22251.
All they did was claim that dealers now have proper software to update BASE MODEL 2020 Fusions.
And send me to dealer, see a tech, etc.
However, whatever dealer did was no help. They claim they have to remove dashboard, perform dianostics, etc.
Dealer has eroded alot of trust with local customers, so I’m not going to let them do this. I suspect they want to sneak in an expensive APIM replacement for no good reason.
Ford will not contact dealer and do much regarding the situation. Only thing they will let me do is take the car to another dealer.
I have tried downgrading the firmware, and then loading the latest. However, that never fixed the problem.
I suspect the core problem is that the firmware has been hardcoded to only work with the 8" display.
Was hoping I could select menu options to change display themes. However, it’s impossible because the important selection buttons don’t work with this firmware version.

Anyway, I’m hoping that someone can recommend how to get the latest firmware to work with 4" displays.
I suspect the firmware for 8" displays utilizes completely different button controls from the 4" display.

Stop talking about “firmware”, Sync3 is not firmware. I’m sure you being a software developer know the difference.

Syn3updater only works with 8 inches packages.
You can manually install NU5T-14G381-BB, which is 3.4.22251 for 4 inches screens.

None of the issues you are describing with buttons should be related to Sync3, but considering we do not know what you have done, you can always download the asbuilt for your VIN from Ford and apply those back. If your unit is stock and for some reason this is based on wrong configuration, that should fix it.

Don’t blame the dealer. You’re doing something they don’t support and I have no idea why they would want to waste time on this.

You installed the wrong version.

Thanks Sandman. Will try installing that NU5T… tarball and see what results I get.

Why the “firmware” comment? I assumed that the device on the car is embedded system software (microcontrollers). Not a CPU. I won’t know the difference because I’m not involved in that system.

Wrong version? Are you implying there’s a 3.4.23188 with 4 inch support?
From Sandman’s comment, I assume one doesn’t exist. So I’m going to downgrade and assume support for 4 inch displays has been dropped.

I blame the Ford Sync team as well as the dealer. I’ve spoken on the phone with some of the Sync techs.
As I mentioned in original post, they recommended I take car to dealer, etc.
If I’m trying to do “something they don’t support”, then the Ford Sync team or dealer would have (hopefully) mentioned it.

General comment. Where is the documentation stating that Syn3Updater only works with 8 inch displays?
I don’t remember seeing that mentioned anywhere in the portions of the CyanLabs UI I utilized.
Anyway, I’ll get this car working again with the older release. Then assume there is no upgrade solution for 4 inch displays. Even though Ford Sync keeps telling me there is.

Consider Sync3 as an OS.
You can change firmware as well for the APIM (or other modules), but it has nothing to do with Sync3.

I do not remember if there’s a specific warning or it explicitly says so.
But from the documentation this is shown as supported/required hardware:

Those are 8 inches screens…
Also, the 4 inches users compared to 8 inches are really small…

Does the site tell you which version is available for you?.
What kind of files do you get from Ford?. You said “corrupted files”, but do you have any file name or something?.

Hi Sandman,

Just answering a few questions. I tried to keep things short as I can on original post, but can explain a bit more.
I have already tried Ford website in the past. I had performed upgrades once before using that method, went smoothly.
That was the upgrade to 22251. However, had alot of failures to install 23188 via Ford website. Download worked without complaint.
However, car always reported corrupted file errors. After that was phone contact with Ford Sync support via phone.
At the time, they admitted their website was causing the corruption.
I discovered the Syn3Updater, and tried that as an alternative. The 23188 it installed on USB looked fine.
So I went ahead and installed it. There were no errors on that install. However, I ran into the 4 vs 8 inch display issue.
Then more calls to Ford Sync, taking car to dealer. Couldn’t get answers from any of them.
I think the tarball you recommended may help.
I’m trying some things now. Will explain what I find out soon.

Please, do not take this the wrong way, but that’s a lot of text for a simple question I’ve asked:

And I only got a partial answer: From your long paragraph I assume Ford is pushing 3.4.23188 4 inches your way

So, if you have that file share the autoinstall.lst file and a screenshot with the SyncMyRide folder’s content for the Ford’s update.

The reason I’m asking is because I want to see what you are trying to install and not go by a “it won’t work”, “Ford sends corrupted files”, which basically tells nothing other than “it does not work”.

When discussing on the phone, Ford Sync wouldn’t say which file or files were corrupted.
They just said “keep trying later”. They admitted to me tech support was working on the problem, etc.
Website and the phone techs did say I needed to upgrade to 3.4.23188. I was just trying to find a solution around their website issues.

Again, do not take this the wrong way, but I’m not asking for what Ford said, I’m asking (for the third time) for you to show whatever Ford sent your way: the autoinstall.lst file and the screenshot for the SyncMyRide folder’s content.

I’ve asked for a simple and direct question, I would expect a simple and direct answer, it should not be that hard considering what you have just said:

So you have the files, I want to see what those are.

Ah. See what you’re getting at.
That download was literally corrupted files. Anything that looked like a text file was basically unreadable.
I don’t mean I didn’t understand what was in the text files. Such as in autoinstall.lst. I’m saying absolute corruption.
Practically random binary.
Nothing even similar to the version of autoinstall.lst as I have seen in the past.
That could mean the binary files were possibly corrupt as well. Lovely ain’t it.
I gave up and deleted it.
I’m currently trying to force a downgrade, in the hopes of reinstalling 3.4.22251.
Then I’ll install the tarball you mentioned. Figured it was worth a fighting chance.

Here’s what I’m doing:
Created Downgrade USB, ran it
Created RWData Cleaner USB, ran it
Created 3.4.22251, ran it
Created Interrogator, ran it. (Got a memory error on the console regarding USB. Bad luck. Stuck at this stage right now.)

Theory is to get Interrogator to verify what I’ve done. If it looks ok, install that tarball you suggested.
Hopefully I will know more soon.

If I can verify what’s on the device, I can (hopefully) get the NU5T tarball you suggested.

Thye Syn3 Updater, left in auto-detect mode with the right configuration, will do this for you in one step.

I noticed the cleaner was installed on the default USB. Just making sure I’m forcing this device to do what I expect.
Glad I did that.
Here’s what’s currently going on.
The car just flat out wouldn’t run the Interrogator. Just displays PKG_ERR.
Even with 16GB thru 64GB USBs. Multiple brands, four different drives.
Up to this point, it still thought it was running 8" display.
Gave up on trying to verify what version was installed. So configured a USB that only installed the NU5T-14G381…
Booted with Ford logo, then went black.
I’m going to experiment with a few more things. But I’m starting to suspect an extremely oddball issue.
I had formatted four different USB drives to utilize the Interrogator. None would boot on the device.
I now have a 3.4.22251 USB installing on the car. I can already see that the display is back again while installing. 8 inch mode.
Appreciate the help. But I’m running out of ideas. If you are too, I suspect I’ll be calling Ford Sync again.
Set up with a second dealer, and see what happens. These 4" displays may just be very prone to issues or even breakdowns.

There are slightly different app files for 8 inch screen and 4 inch screens.

I think what SaNdMaN is looking for is something that gives him a list of the files Ford gave you to see if they gave you the correct ones for your SYNC3 syatem. He does not care if the files are corrupt or not. That is why he is asking for the autoinstall.lst file and the screenshot for the SyncMyRide folder’s contents.

Syncupdater just installs the files for 8 inch SYNC3. You have to manually modify the USB drive created by syncupdater for 4 inch screens.

jmbach,

Sandman’s been a big help. I’ve already tried hacking USB content in various ways. Problem is corrupted autoinstall.lst file.

HOWEVER: Got lucky…an older Ford website download of 23188 on one of my zillion USBs. Without corrupted lst file.
Only one I have.

EDIT: Incorrect file was referenced. Here is the correct content…

Sandman,

Posting an FYI. Keeping it terse as I can.

Since I discovered an uncorrupted 23188 autoinstall.lst, I’ll download the appropriate tarballs from your database and try them.
Also verify the MD5 checksums. I want to eliminate any possibility of data corruption prior to running on the car.
I’ll do this for 22251 as well 23188. Versions with and without the 4" display tarball hack.
If I’m successful, I’ll post a description here on how I made things work.

The files Cyanlabs downloads are straight from the Ford servers. There is no database that Cyanlabs keeps with Sync files. If Ford’s servers go down, and they have, than there are no files to download here.

If they were corrupt than you would see a ton of other posts saying the same thing and Ford would have fixed them quick. If your having data corruption its on your end.
