Never Updates

I have a jailbroken Sync3 and am trying to upload the latest firmware. It says Software Updating and just hangs there. The car eventually shuts off and nothing is updated.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
My current SN shows 3.4 Build 21265_PRODUCT … not sure what the “_PRODUCT” is? Updated everything with this tool years ago and then jailbroke, applied themes and mods.

I had this issue a while back and it turned out my unit did not like my USB thumb drive.
Another time I formatted wrong.
With that said, I also see you are formatted to FAT32. Make sure you are formatted to ExFAT and if that does not work, try another thumb drive.

Read this thread → Tutorial: Sync 3.4 NON-NAV APIM: Failure to Update to Newer Version Sync 3.4
And try with a different quality branded USB.

I checked the log and had plenty of room. I also downgraded and still no luck. I’ll try ExFAT next …

This thumb drive worked to downgrade. The upgrade reformatted it to ExFAT. Trying another drive now …

Post that log.
If so, use a recognized USB brand.

Downgrade log - this was successful

Here is the new upgrade log. Tried with a generic USB as well as a Sandisk Cruzer - both 32GB. Tried with Ignition On and vehicle timed out and shut off to save battery. Tried with engine on and eventually it turned itself off? Went to check and car was off. When started, it said software update was available and did I want to proceed, I clicked Yes and then nothing … left it for a while and came back to a car not running and still at old version. Here is that log:

So, you are currently on 3.3.
You said you checked the log and the unit had plenty of space… So please, provide that log… If you do not have it, create and run an interrogator log… And then upload the XML here…

Log attached
Sync_VX1D1E4A_1FAHP2KTXFG130245.xml (10.4 KB)

Thanks.

As suspected and said on my first post, the unit does not have enough space to process the upgrade. Follow the guide to remove gracenotes and make more space available.

Then you should update your page … it says it needs 1.5G free space and mine has 1.7G???

That’s true and a fair point, the tutorial say “at least”, not “exactly 1.5”.
Space requirement is not always the same, it depends on what’s being processed.
Others with 1.5 were able to install, others were not.
Also, you are trying to install a lot of packages at once, and NOW you are on 3.3 which leaves about 1.7 free… you previously were on 3.4 with less free space, since 3.4 is “bigger”…

EDIT: A note has been added to the tutorial:

FINALLY!!! Removing Gracenotes was not enough. I had to build an update without Gracenotes, update to 3.4.latest then go back and install just Gracenotes. Now everything is up-to-date!

Thanks for your help!

Might be a good idea to tell people to add up all the tar.gz file sizes and make sure that amount of space is available vs just 1.5G. :sunglasses:

Awesome, thank you for the feedback.
Just remember that you will need to do this should you decide to upgrade in the future again. Also, you might get away with a single install by using reformat if that’s an option, but it all depends on what the user wants to/can do.
Finally about adding the values up it’s a good approach, but the files are compressed and take more space on the unit that on the USB, so there’s always some margin of error.
