I just came across with this website and become very interested about this update.
Long story short:
2015 Ford Focus SE. Originally came with Sync 1.
I did the hardware update to Sync 2 and then to Sync 3 months later.
Im currently running Sync3 v3.0.19205 on a Sync3 NonNav APIM.
Im very interested in upgrading to v3.4 and I want to make sure I do everything according to the instructions provided by you all on the website. I will be using windows 10 and a 32GB Sandisk USB drive for this. I really hope to get this right.
I will really appreciate if you can take a look at my SyncMyRide files and diagnostics and confirm if im in good track for the upgrade this weekend.
My concern is that my Sync 3 APIM seems to be a little bit older so Im unsure if it could take all the files on the USB in order for the update.
This is the information I gathered from the APIM diagnostics

INFO: ALL FILES DOWNLOADED AND COPIED TO THE USB DRIVE SUCCESSFULLY!
I do not think that Sync 3.4 with voice and Gracenotes will fit on the unit you have, as it is probably only 8GB of storage. Several folks on this forum have tried this with less than desirable results. However, I believe that 3.3.19052 with voice and Gracenotes will work, as this is under the storage limits. Sync 3.4 is about 2x the size of 3.3 and below.
This will allow you to see what is on the APIM and the storage space and file structure. It will create an xml file you open in a browser.
Run this like an update with an autoinstall.lst file:
Create usb with SyncMyRide folder (format as EXFAT).
Copy the above file into the SyncMyRide folder.
Root is autoinstall.lst and DONTINDX.MSA files.
Autoinstall.lst looks like this:
Insert usb in vehicle and run this. It will produce an xml file on the usb stick in the SyncMyRide folder. Open the xml and go to the bottom of the file to see your storage. The asbuilt info is also in the file near the top.
Hi @F150Chief
Just tried it per your instructions and got a LST_ERR04 once i plugged the USB in
everything seems to be exactly as you instructed. Im using the same USB drive but formatted (exFAT) it once again to get rid of the files that SyncDownloader had initially created
I’m so used to working on 3.4 now that I forget about this.
Well, you have about 8GB of storage, and 3.4 will not fit with Voice and Gracenotes. The highest option that will work reliably with these features is 3.3.19052.
The other option is to replace the unit with a later model with NAV.
That will probably work, that’s up to you. If the install fails, use the downgrade option to recover. Also, make sure you turn off Gracenotes in the media player menus. (If they are still there.)
Your reformat.lst file will have 2 entries for the app and voice files. The autoinstall file requires no changes. The SyncMyRide folder should have 3 files: app, voice, and reformat files.
After you are finished and have a successful install of 3.4, could you run the -AC utility file and post the storage data like above, please? I’d like to see how much space is left.
@F150Chief, this is more a quick optional question that i have since i already have the procedure ready based on your feedback.
whats the reason for deleting the gracenotes line from the reformat.lst file and not from the autoinstall.lst file?
in my past upgrades, i had the idea (i was probably wrong) that the autoinstall.lst file was the one which instructed the apim on what files to install.
You are upgrading from 3.0.to 3.4, which have different file structures and are not compatible. (That’s also why you can’t go back to 3.0 after the upgrade.)
So, for this we use the reformat tool to wipe out all the 3.0 stuff on the APIM and format it with 3.2+ disk formatting, just like you would format a USB drive. This part is done by the reformat tool called thru the autoinstall.lst file.
Next, the system will be blank except for the boot loader. The boot loader requires the files be listed in the reformat.lst file to process.
Once that process is complete, we now have the new operating system on the Sync unit and can use the autoinstall file for future updates.
First of all, thanks so much to you and @CyanLabs for the information and software. I always liked to play around with my sync unit but always thought a 3rd party “development” was missing until today. Thanks again for such a great community.
I just performed the upgrade per your advise and recommendation (No gracenotes). Upgrade took barely 6 minutes!
All functions for my car are looking good so far. Display transitions are way faster and GUI is just beautiful.
After the upgrade and performing a master reset, I’m having 3 minor issues. I was hoping you could give me some ideas on how to solve them. I have way to modify AsBuild data if required.
display is very dim compared to what it used to be before the upgrade. I can barely see the texts during daylight
EDIT. i just found this…will try. Im currently in A
If you are having issues with the screen being extremely dark, in Forscan set Illumination strategy to FoE APIM As-Built 7D0-01-01: xBxx-xxxx-xxxx
brightness cant be changed. the set point value is stuck in the middle of the bar. when i try to increase it, it goes back to the middle. This occurs on DAY, NIGHT, AUTO modes.
i do have 2 buttons for manual control of the dash lights (i confess i havent tried yet, but i did notice that the ICP was way brighter than sync)
AUTO mode doesn’t react to headlights switch. Although this didn’t use to work before either.
hello @F150Chief
sorry for the double post. i was able to fix the screen brightness not being responsive with:
If you are having issues with the screen being extremely dark,

i changed from A to B and now everything brightness related works! AUTO mode is now even responsive with my headlight switches (it dims and swithes from DAY to NIGHT!!)
as final questions (so far), i have 2. this can be a long shot but i do want to ask:
*since in switch from sync 1 to sync 2 and then sync 3, i was never able to get rid of this very only DTC:
*when i switched to sync 3, even though my APIM is a non-nav, i installed the GPS antenna under the IP dash. but, whats the point of having a GPS antenna on a non-nav APIM unit?
