Ordered a SYNC 4 APIM, lets see what happens once it arrives!

Hey, I notice a lot of knowledge here about this so basically i am doing a 8" to 12" on my 2021 f150. I Already have the 12" apim, the screen with the bezel and the lower bezel for radio controls relocations. Now that I thought I had everything I notice the 8" APIM has less connector than the 12". Reading some things here I can think one of them Is for gps but I don’t really know. Does anyone know anything about that?

Vehicle Make: Ford
Vehicle Model: F-150
Vehicle Year: 2021
Vehicle Region: ROW

What is the trim level of the F-150?
What country are you in?
Do you want built-in NAV?

See the pic for the connector descriptions…

The present APIM in the vehicle is apparantly NON_NAV, so no GPS connector in Sync 4. All 12" versions will have the GPS connector and will require a GPS antenna of some sort, or there will be errors. This can be the small GPS antennas that will fit under the dash, but forward under the windshield. Here is an example of what you will need…

Did you source the new cable for the 12" screen? It is different than the 8" cable. There is a pic further up in this thread.

Thanks a lot!!! This is of great help, im noticing my factory harness also has this connector missing (attached), this is something that is require in order to the screen to power up or not? Also i have not sort that out, i researched a lot and there ir nothing out their about this. A saw that you already talked about the C2383CA that is very similar to the connector of the 8” so i think i can come up with something with out the C2383CA Conncetor that i cannot find anywhere. Thanks a lot!

Hey, how do you figure out if your car is CGEA 1.2 or 1.3? My car is an australian Ford falcon. I’ve gone from what it originally in 2012 to SYNC 2 in the 2014 models then to SYNC 3. This model ended in 2016 and no newer models.

1.2

Power for the screen, yes it is required.
The connector indicated in the red box of your pic looks like C2254B. If it is, it is +12VDC for the display unit.

Also, you need this cable…or some replica of it.
The connector in this pic is the 12" variety. The +12VDC power on this cable is for the data, not backlight.

This is what you have, the 8" variety.

Ok, I’ve installed the SYNC 4 APIM and removed the HS and MS CAN wires. The system turns on and stays on for a few minutes then turns off again. I haven’t had a chance to fully mess with the asbuilt but I can’t see anything in the database that would fix that.

There are other problems like cant access audio screen, add phone, climate screen etc but I assume I can fix those in the asbuilt config.

Does forscan only show the asbuilt config, or can I access the more user friendly config screen. It only recognises it as sync 3 and not sync 4.

No DTC’s?

Always had a couple from the initial conversions so didn’t think to check them. I’ll check tomorrow.

I hooked up my Sync 4 8" Nav APIM module in the truck. Everything boots up after I removed the APIM connector pins 53/54 but there is still some weirdness.

It’s a AWD Lariat Lux w/ 4k FX4

  • Radio control buttons on dash do not work. Steering wheel controls function though.
  • Information chime settings appear in menu but are grayed out
  • Seat control settings appear in menu but are grayed out
  • Wireless carplay doesn’t always work due to application projection not working properly

Below is the APIM code I’ve been using. Any ideas on how to solve the issues above?

Played around with it some more today and ended up with the APIM config below. Wireless Carplay working, radio control buttons working, info chime and seat control settings gone as they were in Sync 3.4.

Back up camera still not working, any ideas?

Do we only need to remove HS1 CAN or MS CAN too. I remeoved both.

No DTCs. So I have edited the ASBUILT to almost completley match my SYNC 3 asbuilt but still no luck. I feel like most of the changes aren’t writing to the APIM. Screen doesn’t turn off now but have to manually turn it off and on now.

So far these are not working:

  • Can’t Access Audio screen. Just constant static. Steering wheel Volume buttons work but nothing else.
  • Can’t add phone
  • Can’t change settings
  • Reverse Camera
  • Reverse Sensors.

you remove 2 wires which iirc is HS CAN

that won’t work, also if ForScan isn’t detecting the SYNC 4 module then you will need to recreate the profile and if thats still not working contact ForScan

i removed HS CAN 1 LOw and HIGh then MS CAN LOW and HIGH. I tried putting them back in but with MS CAN in I couldn’t start the car anymore and SYNC would boot but then go to a black screen. Same thing with HS1 CAN but I could start the car.
I can’t recreate the profile as this car originally didn’t have SYNC. With the original profile forscan doesn’t search for the MS can modules. With the profile from the SYNC 2 model it detects them. Forscan detects SYNC 4 with the standard asbuilt and with the other config style it detects it as SYNC 3. I’ll try contacting forscan and see if they can help with it detecting SYNC 4.

Any ideas on what I should be checking in the SYNC 4 asbuilt to try and fix these issues? I’ve gone through everything I can and changed to what makes sense and matches the SYNC 3

FORScan needs to recognize the unit as Sync 4, and use the Asbuilt Configuration screen, not the “easy” screen. When you get those 2 things, the asbuilt mods should write correctly.

I have been using the Asbuilt screen. The asbuilt file that loads up is the SYNC 4 asbuilt. Splash screen changed once from a bronco style to ford logo when i changed it to mustang shelby but nothing else seems to take. Going to see if forscan can help with the car profile first.

I know its been awhile since there was any movement in this thread. I was reading on another forum, ford has enabled a climate bar now in sync 4 but im not sure if it only applies to the 12" screen, or if it applies to 8/10/12 thought someone might find this interesting. I am wanting to do sync4 in my fusion possibly but without the climate screen im kinda SOL.

The climate bar uses the Unreal Graphics Engine and is meant for the 12" screens. I don’t know if it will work with 8" screens, but I would say it is doubtful as the 2 APIM’s use different video driver sets for the screen sizes, as well as a different hardware connection.

It seems like the rush to retrofit Sync 4 into previous Sync vehicles has slowed considerably. There are a ton of Sync 4 units on eBay that have been there for a while. The compatibility is probably not what people hoped, which was expected from the beginning.
