You need the ETHERNET network connected and working thru the GWM.
So I have a Ford Focus estate 2022, not the facelift.
Itâs a 2021 model manufactured i january 2022, one of the last before the facelift took over.
Would it be easier for me to upgrade to SYNC 4 or do I have the same module limitations as any other older SYNC 3 cars?
Is there a way to check if I have newer modules in Forescan?
if yes, what should I look for?
You will have the limitations. The vehicle is designed for Sync 3, not 4.
Thanks for your input.
What is exactly needed for full functionality with SYNC 4?
Other than the obvious OTA updates and subscriptions not workingâŚ
Hardware I mean⌠I have read thereâs quite a big difference in network especially.
Is it even posible to have it all work flawlessly and the possibly having updates done by your local Ford shop? If theyâll do them of courseâŚ
A long time during 2022 Ford couldnât get any of the 12â displays and thus decided to sell cars in europe with the small 8â displays. I donât know if these had SYNC 3 or 4.
But what Iâm getting to is could it be that I have newer hardware that are (or more) compatible with SYNC 4?
For a fully functional (as designed) Sync 4 system, you would need the Sync 4 APIM, compatible GWM, and compatible TCU. All of these components work together in the Sync 4 environment to provide the infotainment system, navigation, and updates for the infotainment system as well as updates for the vehicle systems. Thus, the vehicle itself must be âSync 4â system compatible, for lack of a better term.
Ford dealerships or service centers are told by Ford that retrofitting or supporting retrofitted systems in vehicles (like Sync 3 and 4) is not supported. However, you can find Ford (franchised) service centers that will do work like this. Keep in mind this is not supported by Ford and âcouldâ have warranty implications.
Sync 4 comes with 8 and 12" displays, as well as others in Lincoln vehicles. The display driver sets are largely what determines the compatibility with Sync 3 or 4. There are some folks over on FMods modifying Sync 3 for the portrait 10" and larger displays, and have had success at this.
I am not sure if a 2022 Focus would have the correct hardware to interface with Sync 4. But, being 2022, the vehicle likely has most of the updated systems, or at least compatible, needed for Sync 4 to at least have a basic functionality. That said, it will require a lot of work and money to retrofit Sync 4 into the vehicle as a working system. Since the vehicle was manufactured with Sync 3, it will never be eligible for Sync 4 features or updates to the Sync system or maps.
Hope that helpsâŚ
Thanks. It sure helps.
Most likely wonât upgrade to SYNC 4. Unless a complete kit with everything, software and hardware that worked flawlessly would be released.
If I would look for compatible hardware, just out of curiosity, with Forscan.
What should I look for? Any special versions?
There is quite a variety of hardware, I wonât know for a 2022 Focus.
I saw just the other day that Infotainment.com sells an SYNC 3 to 4 upgrade
for certain car models (F150 atleast).
Only thing needed is a new SYNC 4 APIM and an adapter cable, which are included.
Thereâs not full details on functionality but it seems everything works but the
OTA updates. No software change (Forscan or any other) is needed.
It seems they prepare the APIM to your vehicle in advance using your VIN and model.
This would mean this upgrade should work without the OTA on pretty much
all recent SYNC 3 cars. Unless the F150 has special hardware other car models
donât have that are more compatible with SYNC 4.
This upgrade uses the current 8â SYNC 3 screen for the upgrade.
I believe the apim gets wifi from TCU while it creates adhoc network for wireless projection. were you able to get some/most of climate controls working? if so, would you mind sharing your asbuilts?
Thank you
can you post a pic of your climate screen? when I activate that, the icons are very goofy and not well laid out on screen
I have a 2022 f150 with a 12-in display and sync4. During manufacturing Ford removed navigation from trucks that should have had it, Iâm assuming because they could not get the navigation apim modules. Does anyone here have experience with adding the proper apim module with navigation to one of these trucks? My apim is missing the connector in the top left corner where the navigation antenna would attach. I feel like I should just be able to switch apim modules and find the wire connector. I scanned through this thread and didnât find anybody with this issue. Surely there are lots of f-150s out there like mine
I suspect this will be more difficult than you wish, due to VIN locks on the APIMâs
Well, I know it can be done because infotainment solutions sells a kit to update the 8-in screen to a 12-in screen. The kit comes with a new apim module and necessary programming procedures. Iâm just trying to find someone who has been through the process. With the amount of f-150s and 2022 that they built and removed the navigation feature, there has to be someone out there that has resolved this
It may work but most likely the replacement APIM wonât get any updates or anything
Read through the discussion which was very informative. I have a 2021 Mach-E (Chinese market) and was considering buying an APIM module (EU location) to replace mine to change the location and language. But the module in the Chinese Mach-e has 2 additional ports which I plan to leave unplugged since the EU module doesnât have them. Would anyone in this forum be able to identify what they are and if theyâd cause issues if left unplugged. All the other ports are the same as the EU module
This is automotive ethernet, used to connect to the GWM and TCU.
I believe this is for an external power connection, but not 100% positive.
