Problem with sync update

Hello all,

Like so many here, I have updated sync and the navigation maps on our focus and kuga several times without any problems.

Now a good friend of mine has a Ford Ranger from 2017 that still had the old sync version (sync 3.0 build 18025 and navigation map F8). Offered to update this software as well and as usual downloaded the software via cyanlabs on the USB stick that I always use before updating, of course formatted first.
Stick placed in the car and software update started. After the system was restarted, the well-known update screen appeared with a picture in which the ford logo and the mustang logo appear in turn, with the update bar below it. However, the message “please insert USB stick…” also appeared above the bar while the USB stick is still in the port. After 20 minutes of waiting, still the message and no progress in the update bar (still completely empty). Several attempts were made (downloaded software again, disconnected battery) to get the update process going, but unfortunately the same screen keeps popping up. As soon as the unit is switched on, the update screen appears immediately.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get the unit working again? Thanks everyone for reading and thinking along, hope someone can help me.

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?
No error message, but the update screen appears immediately with the message that the USB stick must be inserted, while it is in it. It seems that the system is stuck and no longer recognizes a USB stick at all.

Perhaps try downloading to a different USB stick or try a different port in the car if possible.
By the way the latest sync3 update on Cyanlabs is now 3.4.23188.

We had some users that had that exact same issue.
It’s not common, but it’s not rare either.

Things to check:

  • make sure no other device is connected to the car, only the pendrive.
  • the device you are using seems to be generic, use a quality branded USB pendrive (pendrive, not disk or SD card).
  • try a different pendrive
  • try a different port
  • it all this fails, consider checking the wiring for the USB port/hub.
  • replace the USB hub.

Ordered a quality branded USB stick on recommendation. Received a Sandisk stick yesterday and immediately created a new file. Stick placed in car and initially no recognition of the stick. However, after a soft reset, the update started and finished after an hour.
