Red screen error

Hi all. Tried updating my van using the exact same way that worked for the car. But unfortunately around the 18 min mark I’m getting the red screen error. I don’t even know how to upload the log details.

SYNC Region: EU

Navigation Variant: Nav

Manufacturer Year: Pre MY20

Install Type: OEM

Old SYNC Version: 3.0.20204

New SYNC Version: 3.4.23188

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?

The van has NAV? It’s a 64GB APIM?

Do you have an XML file from the Interrogator Utility from before the upgrade?

Looks like it cannot find the file shown. Make sure the USB drive is the only one connected in the vehicle. Disconnect your phone if it is connected.

Did you try it again with a fresh USB profile in the Updater? Log file will be important for those wise ones to see.

Hi. It’s halfway through the download now. On another usb. Think I messed up by not using the interrogator tool. Will work out how to upload the log tomorrow. Thanks again for your help. Does a red screen mean it’s knackered?

hi all so i just tried again on another sandisk 64gb usb, still doing the exact same red error screen at 18 mins into the update. i know its me and its gonna be something stupid ive done or doing. any help would be very much appreciated. thanks.

This tells me your APIM is 32GB, not 64GB… So it’s not OEM or the vehicle is imported from the US.
Does this ring any bell?.

If so, you can recover the unit by:

A) recreate the upgrade USB but telling Syn3updater the unit does not have NAV

or

B) use a cut down map package (available through syn3updater) with only a few languages and countries selected, thus reducing the amoung of space required. Awesome, but just for clarification purposes: is the unit imported?.
I’m asking because a red screen at 18 minutes tells me the unit is 32 GB, which is NAV-capable, but can’t host all the EU maps (hence the size of the EU APIMs, which is 64GB).
A non-NAV APIM fails at around 8 minutes in…

Anyways, glad you got it recovered for the time being.

Hi. All I know is that the van was registered new in wales/uk. But just to add, when I pulled the glovebox down to find the APIM module. It looked suspiciously like someone had been there before me. One more question if that’s ok tho, I’m planning on installing a sync 3 compatible reverse camera. Will this be as normal as enabling it on an official 3.4 sync update. Genuine thanks to you and the forum.

Assuming your wiring and camera are correct than yes.

Create and run an interrogator log against the unit, it will tell you which APIM you have.
Share the XML file with us (redact the VIN from the file’s name and content if you care about it, you can open the file with any text editor like notepad).

If it’s a NAV variant, you will be able to enable that by using the guide I sent before.

The Sync3 version you installed is official as well, you downloaded it from Ford’s servers. Syn3updater is just the middleman, that’s it, but all packages are Ford’s. You can say you got an official build via an unofficial method

And yes, from the tech spec, you will be able to enable that in the software, you may need forscan and and an adapter, but that’s about it.

Try getting an OEM camera if possible, I remember some after market cameras having issues with the latest 3.4 builds.

Hi. Yeah I definitely will do that this week and upload the results. And thank you again for sharing how to cut down on maps to enable nav. And confirming my camera question. It will be an oem set up, that’s why I wanted to confirm before committing to purchase. Can’t believe how good this forum is, and I will be donating as the savings from people’s knowledge and walkthroughs are worth every penny.
