Hello everyone, I have a 2021 Ford Edge and I am interested in a 360 camera feature. The 2015-2020 Edge (SYNC 3) and 2021-2024 Edge (SYNC 4) has always had the option for either a simple reverse camera connected directly to the APIM, or a front 180 camera, where both the front and rear cameras connect to the IPMB. Right now I only have a reverse camera.
But what is stopping me from purchasing a Lincoln MKX/Nautilus IPMB and cameras, and connecting it to my Edge? Is this a good idea, or will it end in money and time wasted? The 360 camera is available on the 2016-2018 MKX/2019-2020 Nautilus (SYNC 3) and 2021-2023 Nautilus (SYNC 4). (Excluding 2024+ Nautilus).
I am trying to research this topic more. So far, the only major difference I have found is that the camera selection button on the Edge does not connect directly to the IPMB, instead it communicates over the network or something, but I don’t think that issue will be a big problem.
I don’t know what the difference in the IPMBs are. They look physically the same. Some of the Lincoln 360 cameras share parts with the 2015-2020 F-150 cameras.
The difference in the IPM is the actual CPU capability and logic in the unit, the earlier iteration worked using just the horizon so its just looking for a set of box shapes.
Every module you see on that list has the potential for needing logic or firmware changes to get it to work as well as the possibility that they have to be replaced due to underlying components.
I added 360 cameras to my Expedition. Sourced everything on Ebay and it works fine. This was a Sync 3 system though but can’t imagine it would be any different for a Sync 4 system. I did not have to update any calibrations and only had to change a few AB settings.
I have found more information related to the 360 camera system. There are companies out there that sell a 15.5" screen and SYNC 4 APIM to upgrade for the 2016-2020 F-150 and 2017-2022 F-250. But what will happen to the 360 camera system? It looks like it works the same as in SYNC 3.

NOT WORKING
As shown, the 360 camera system uses the horizon only. It doesn’t take up multiple areas such as newer Fords like the Lightning or Mach-E. It looks like the physical camera button must be used to cycle through views instead of using the touchscreen.
Definitely expensive parts!! I wanted to show that an older IPMB originally meant to work with SYNC 3, is working with SYNC 4. I hope that it is possible for an IPMB with 360 camera to work on a SYNC 4 Ford Edge.
As long as the programming is correct for the camera and CANBUS communications this will work. Just mimic the settings for Sync 3. Sync 4 will need to indicate using an IPMB.

Unless it is possible to use the screen with a stacked camera display because the Edge has a vertical display (similar to 2024 Ranger), I am thinking that I should look for a 360 IPMB that was originally meant to work with SYNC 3. It should keep the video output simple so that it only uses the horizon and there is only one video display.
Possible IPMBs could be sourced from:
2016-2020 MKX/Nautilus (without integrated PAM?)
2018-2020 Expedition (no PTBA)
2015-2019 F-150 (no PTBA, no CHMSLC?)
2018 forward IPMB w/360. You may not be able to flash the older ones if that becomes necessary. The camera view settings pertain to how the APIM handles the display, the IPMB outputs are the same format.
Super Duty series rear cab mounted camera, not applicable.
PAM is in the BCM for these…however, the Edge or MKX/Nautilus IPMB would be the closest match and not require flashing. It will require the camera alignments, which as far as I know must be done at a Ford service center.
I think I had myself confused with the 2019-2023 Nautilus having a standalone PAM. I thought I read something about it in the workshop manual.
Possible IPMBs:
2018-2020 MKX/Nautilus
2018-2020 Expedition (no PTBA)
2018-2019 F-150 (no PTBA)
2021-2023 Nautilus
All of the other IPMBs use coax wiring, so that seems too difficult. I don’t want to use an Edge IPMB because it doesn’t have the side mirror cameras or the rear 180 camera.
If I were to get an IPMB from an F-150 or Expedition, is it possible to flash the firmware from the MKX/Nautilus, so that something like the car icon will look like an SUV instead of a pickup truck?
Who knows if I would ever be able to complete the camera alignments. If I ever get it to work, I may just have to live with the images stitched a little bit off .
I am not sure if I 100% understand Ford’s camera system.
I have the basic understanding that, in a reverse camera only scenario, the camera video feed connects directly to the APIM. The camera has a LIN bus that connects to the BCM.
In a scenario with multiple cameras, an IPMB is needed. All of the camera’s LIN bus and video feeds connect to the IPMB. The IPMB forwards the video feed to the APIM.
The camera’s LIN bus is used to command the camera to power on/off, zoom in/out.
I have also seen SYNC 3 vehicles be able to accept an RCA (NTSC?) camera connection. I don’t think this works with SYNC 4.
I think the part I don’t understand is the difference between the SYNC 3 and 4 video formats.
This is correct. The combined camera feeds from the IPMB feed the APIM just as the stand alone cameras would, therefore the IPMB output mimics that of a single camera, as far as resolution and picture format/size is concerned. Think of the IPMB as a video hub, which can switch and/or combine the various video sources or cameras.
Sync 4 does not use an RCA input, however there are adapters which could work for that. Security system cameras come to mind.
Probably no need as they are mostly the same. You will need to adjust the asbuilt to display the SUV icon rather than a truck. You should be able to look at any Ford Edge equipped with an IPMB to find the code for that.
As far as the camera adjustments, you could copy the ones from a similar vehicle. They are not in the OEM asbuilt, you will need direct access to another vehicle. I have found that the differences between vehicles can be noticeable, the only way to get it truly right is to have the calibration done. But it’s only really noticeable in the 360 view.
The IPMB will most likely come from a 2018-2019 F-150, because many are available. Would it matter if I get one that has PTBA and 360 camera. Or should I get one with only 360 camera and no PTBA?
