I tried updating to 3.4.21020 and after the initial reboot the unit is stuck on ‘Please insert USB stick’, I’ve tried both USB ports, various USB sticks and a reset (power+skip) but it just boots into the same screen asking the same question - any idea how I can either progress the upgrade or boot it back into a good state?

To clarify, the update was successful, but you are getting the message for the usb every time you start the vehicle? Can you run the Interrogator Tool from the Syn3 Updater in the tools tab and post the results, please…

It’s still looking for the files on the usb, so something is wrong there. Make sure there are no other usb devices connected to the system.

Since the unit is in reformat (boot) mode, try this:

Make a usb with the following:
In the root of the usb, place a new reformat.lst file with the content below.
In the root of the usb, copy a DONTINDX.MSA (if you don’t have it, it’s optional.)
Make a folder called SyncMyRide.
In the SyncMyRide folder, place all of the files listed below in the new reformat.lst file…
You have this in your previous install set.

Lesser of the two evils, I have a 32GB USB I’m preparing now but it’s USB2.0 so takes a while whereas the external drive is USB3.0 but I’ll give it a go and let you know

So I managed to find a 14GB USB3 stick and selected a version one below without maps so that if it worked, I could go to the latest with maps once my new stick arrives tomorrow and it went on fine so I think you were correct and I was using the wrong media.

Doesn’t really work that way, you’ll need to downgrade and reinstall new version with maps.

I ran through this, first steps seemed to go OK but on the restart, I ended up back at the reformatting tool with the Please insert USB stick... so I think with the downgrade process I’m now on 3.3.19052 and it’s awaiting the update files but it won’t read them, even on the new 32GB/USB3 stick - I’ll keep trying it but it makes no sense that it’s not reading the files - if I manage to get them installed I’ll get the Interrogator Tool output

I finally figured this out… whilst it was (stuck) in the reformatter tool I tried plugging my iPhone into both of the USB sockets and had no power, I reset the Sync via the power+skip a few times and on the fourth try my phone started charging . I went away and got a USB stick with a status LED on it so I could see when it was being read and the same thing, so it seems like the USB sockets are not powering up occasionally in this mode.

Thanks for your help, I’m now on the latest version with maps.

I am wondering if this is an issue several folks are having with the updates, where the “Media device changed” or “Insert USB” messages are coming up and nothing appears to be wrong with the software configurations, etc. Thanks for the update, enjoy…!

Just for clarification (incase it helps anyone else), to get the latest version to load it took me at least 10 resets, on the last try I inserted the USB during the ‘Starting update…’ prompt which last for about ~5 seconds and then it seemed to kick in.
