Sync 1 -> Sync 3 Upgrate Issue - 2011 Ford Fiesta

I am trying to update my 2011 Ford Fiesta from SYNC 1 to SYNC 3.

I was able to boot my Screen and APIM on the bench using an ESP32 and a CAN transceiver, but was not able to get it to boot once installed in the car.

Sync 3 P/N: CL-MJ25N0GLDU
Manufacture Date: 4/18/2016

I am able to update and see my APIM programming via Forscan on CAN, but SYNC 3 is not booting up with the key.

I bought a generic harness for a 4" to 8" sync upgrade, so I am sure I am missing some wires somewhere.

Any inputs would be appreciated!

Do you have a error message, if so what is it?

Update Method: Official Ford

This is a C1CMA vehicle, so there are specific settings for it. In the asbuilt database you will see these annotated as C1CMA. You will need to use these settings.

As far as the wiring…

Thanks for the response! This is what I was using for pinouts (photos attached).

I will do some digging on the C1CMA! Thank you!!

@F150Chief, would you expect the screen to boot as soon as the key is turned on, or would it not be uncommon to see a mismatch with the settings, so it won’t boot at all?

For reference, I do have the AS-BUILT file saved from a backup before I loaded the APIM with 3.0.

Here is the stock AS-BUILT data from the SYNC 1 and the 3 APIM.

The asbuilt won’t keep the unit from booting, there is a wiring issue.

Perfect, that’s very helpful! Thank you!

I suspect it’s on the high speed CAN pins (pins 19 & 20), as I am able communicate to the APIM via forscan (pins 53 & 54).

That’s probably reveresed as you don’t communicate with the APIM via HS1, but use HS3. Also an issue with HS1 will not boot the APIM for Sync 1/2/3.

If you can see the unit in FORScan, are you sure it’s not booting or is it booting and not displaying on the screen?

I am not positive it is not booting, it is not displaying anything on the screen.

I am able to communicate with it using Forscan, so maybe it is is booting, just not displaying anything?

The interesting thing is, I am able to boot the Sync 3 on the bench using 4 wires and a CAN setup with ESP32. Power (pin 1), ground (pin 37), CAN high (pin 19) and CAN low (pin 20).

Once I send the simulated message via CAN, the unit boots like usual. So this makes me think there is an error on the HS3, but I am not able get it to display anything in the car.

Upon further research, i have found that the BCM that would send the CAN signal does not give the boot signal on the 2011 fiesta, i think a newer BCM is required. I might attempt to grab a newer one and program it for my fiesta to see if i can get it to boot…
